Hi, I’m Anna.

I work with women in grant giving organisations, who are struggling at work after returning from maternity leave, to help them feel capable, so they can start enjoying work again.

Returning to work after maternity is hard.

One study found that 42% of women lack confidence in their own ability after a year or more away from work.

The first few months returning to work can feel fine, as you slowly transition to being back in the work place.

The trouble really begins a few months in, as a loss of confidence leads to overwhelm, anxiety and feelings of inferiority.

You worry that you at not performing well enough at work. You worry you don’t have what it takes anymore.

This affects your relationships at work and your ability to do your job. While the worry follows you home and invades your time with your children and partner.  

Let’s think about this for a moment.

It’s absolutely natural when we have a prolonged break out of the workplace to feel less confident when we return to work.

That being away from work means we experience a crisis of confidence, self-doubt and overwhelm when we return.  

 It’s not our fault and it’s really common, remember 42% of women feel this way.

Just as having a baby is a huge life transition, returning to work is also a time of transition. We need to give ourselves time and space to prepare and adjust to the new reality of having been away and having so much to juggle.

You’ve tried ignoring your anxiousness and self-doubt, telling yourself to get a grip, immersing yourself in work. You’ve tried positive affirmations. None of it is working. It feels like your confidence reduces further each month while your feelings of overwhelm and anxiety increase.

When we are struggling, we can feel ashamed, why aren’t we coping? Why have I lost confidence?

We also worry that we don’t want to bring attention to how we are feeling. We wonder if our colleagues and managers have noticed. We worry that we are not performing well enough in our job and in our darkest moments that we might be disciplined, or even worse lose our job.

The truth is very different. You are performing in your job. No one is worried about your performance except you.

Working is like riding a bike, the skills, experience and knowledge we grow in our careers are always there, we don’t forget or lose them.

We can regain our faith in our abilities, feel capable and competent again and comfortable with our colleagues and managers.

You still offer all the wonderful skills, qualities and experience you had before maternity leave and in fact, you offer much more to your employer after your maternity leave.

I struggled myself when I returned to work after my second child. Although I breezed through my first return to work everything about my second return felt harder. I lost confidence in my ability to do my job and felt incapable, inferior, overwhelmed and increasingly anxious at work.

I stuck it out, got help and overcame my challenges to enjoy my work again and feel valuable. I now help other women to have successful transitions back to work after maternity leave.

Training, qualifications & experience

I'm a qualified Life Coach trained by the Beautiful You Coaching Academy, which is certified with the International Coaching Federation.  I also work as a Social Prescriber in the NHS supporting people to make changes and achieve health and wellbeing goals. 

I’ve worked in the charity sector, managing delivery of community development projects, applying for funding and reporting impact to donors. I’m passionate about investing in communities, supporting communities to find their own solutions and valuing community and voluntary sector organisations.

I’m a Pregnancy Yoga Teacher, have two children and have navigated two returns to work after maternity leave.
