If you’ve ever wondered how to feel more confident in your career, you’re not alone. Every single day I speak to women at all different stages of careers from entry level through to C suite, who are unhappy at work due to their lack of confidence holding them back.

This shows up in a variety of different ways including.

  1. Stopping them from stepping into their current role and showing up with authority.
  2. Preventing them from taking the next step up the career ladder and going for that promotion.
  3. Keeping them stuck in a role (or even an industry) that they feel unfulfilled in, but are afraid of transitioning from.
  4. Robbing them of making the dream business they are obsessed with ever coming to life.

Quite frankly, I’m sick of seeing these talented, amazing, capable women not meeting their full career potential due to this lack of confidence and self-doubt, so today I want to share with you the very first step to take to begin to build lasting inner confidence, and it’s probably not what you think...

Now, there are many, many tools, tips and strategies that I share with my clients on their confidence-building journey but what I am about to share is the fundamental first step, and it’s…

Treat yourself with the utmost respect

That means;

  • Making sure you’re a priority too.
  • Seeing your needs, wants and desires as important, and consistently meeting them.
  • Speaking to and about yourself with the same kindness and respect you give to others.
  • Defining, honouring, and communicating your boundaries.

Why does this even matter?

It matters because every single time you put yourself last, ignore your needs, speak about yourself negatively and don’t respect your boundaries, you send a message to your brain that you don't matter as much as other people. You tell yourself that you’re not as important or as worthy as they are. Over time this chips away at your self-worth and self-confidence.

Look at it like this…

Maybe you have a goal of getting a promotion? How much more likely is it that you will get it if you turn up confidently as your best self and not a burnt-out frazzled version of you?

Perhaps you want to change careers and retrain in a new profession? How are you going to keep up your study plan if your energy is low and you’re not prioritising your needs?

Possibly you’re wanting to start up your own business? How are you going to be the face of your brand and show up consistently for your clients/customers if you don’t you up for yourself?

Finally, you might not be planning on changing jobs and instead want to feel more in control in your existing role? Wouldn’t it be much easier to do that if you didn’t constantly chip away at your self-worth and self-confidence by constantly putting yourself to the bottom of the pile?

Whatever your goals and dreams are, you need to build them on good foundations, you are the foundations and you have to look after you first.

It’s time for some honest reflection now…

Are you treating yourself with the utmost respect?

I mean really?

Or is there some room for improvement here?

I hope this was helpful to point you in the right direction to start building the confidence you need to make your career goals a reality.
