Stuck in a routine? Try doing something different

Doing things differently now and again can be a bit daring and quite exciting. Most of us are creatures of habit with a routine or some kind of ritual. It feels comfortable, familiar and safe, but sometimes it can also leave life feeling a little repetitive.

Just for the record, I’m very much a creature of habit and a bit of a control freak too. The difference is that I know it and consciously adjust to compensate.

What about you? Do you do the same thing day in and day out, stuck in the same daily routine? Or do you regularly manage to inject some interest and variety into life?

Really, it’s a matter of choice, a bit of effort and a desire to live a more interesting life.

Why small changes matter

So, do something different, but what?

Well, it could be something simple, such as taking a different route, trying somewhere new for lunch, or changing part of your normal routine.

If you don’t go out much, how about going to the cinema for a change, treating yourself to a meal, or visiting a local place of interest? If you go out a lot, stay in for a change, or go somewhere completely different at a different time or on a different day.

It doesn’t matter how big or small the change is. What matters is that it breaks the pattern of what you usually do.

Step outside your comfort zone

Small changes like these can feel refreshing. Trying something different might not sound life-changing, but even the smallest changes can have a knock-on effect somewhere else in your life.

Of course, there are some things you wouldn’t, or shouldn’t, change because they already work well. You’re looking for different, not difficult.

That said, it’s good to step outside your comfort zone and challenge yourself now and again. If you want to make bigger lifestyle changes, that’s the next step: making plans, setting goals and creating a vision for the life you want.

Now that really can be life-changing.

Changing your routine can change your perspective

For this exercise, though, small changes are enough.

Even small changes can encourage you to pay more attention to what you do, how you do it and whether your usual routines are still working for you. It can genuinely bring another dimension to your life, turning dull routines into something more interesting and productive.

Others will notice too. At first, they’ll probably think you’ve gone mad and lost the plot.

You’ll hear comments like:

“You’ve never done that before.”
“You look different.”
“What do you mean you’re out tonight?”
“You’re doing what?”

But don’t forget, it’s your life.

Any changes you make, whether big or small, are your choice. Suddenly, dull and boring becomes mysterious and interesting.

You don't have to reinvent your life to make it feel different. Sometimes, doing one small thing differently is enough to remind you that your routine isn't set in stone.
