Behaviours of genuine people

Whether you're building a network of friends, growing your career or developing your own business, most of us value genuine relationships.

Authentic people often make us feel comfortable to be ourselves. They tend to communicate honestly, follow through on their commitments and don't feel the need to pretend to be someone they're not.

Of course, none of us gets this right all the time. Authenticity isn't about perfection—it's about becoming more self-aware and acting in a way that's true to your values.

Here are six qualities that genuine people often display, and which we can all strive to develop ourselves.

1. They don't seek constant attention

Genuine people don’t look for reinforcement of their own ego. They are already full of self-belief and self-confidence.

2. They don’t need to be liked

Genuine people understand that not everyone will like them, and that's OK.

Rather than changing who they are to gain approval, they stay true to their values while treating others with kindness and respect. They recognise that healthy relationships are built on authenticity, not on trying to please everyone all of the time.

3. They keep their promises

Trust is built through consistency.

Genuine people are usually realistic about the commitments they make and, whenever possible, follow through on them. If circumstances change and they can't keep a promise, they're honest about it and communicate openly.

4. They don't take everything personally

People who know themselves well are often better able to separate constructive feedback from personal criticism.

They understand that misunderstandings happen and are less likely to take offence where none was intended. This resilience helps them navigate relationships with greater confidence and perspective.

5. They don't feel the need to boast

People who are comfortable with themselves rarely feel the need to constantly prove their worth.

They recognise both their strengths and the areas where they're still learning. That balance allows confidence to come across naturally, without needing to compare themselves to others.

6. Their actions match their words

One of the clearest signs of authenticity is consistency.

Genuine people generally try to live by the values they encourage in others. Rather than simply offering advice, they aim to demonstrate those behaviours in their own lives, recognising that none of us is perfect, but all of us can continue learning.

Authenticity starts with self-awareness

All of these qualities have one thing in common: self-awareness.

The more we understand ourselves, our strengths, our values and the areas we'd like to improve, the easier it becomes to build genuine relationships with others.

Authenticity isn't something we're born with or achieve overnight. It's something we develop over time through honesty, reflection and a willingness to keep growing.

If becoming more self-aware is something you'd like to work on, coaching can provide the space to explore your values, build confidence and develop stronger, more authentic relationships with both yourself and those around you.
