Understanding stress and what can help
Stress seems to be talked about far more now than it was in previous decades. The modern world moves quickly, and many people feel under pressure from all directions.
What is stress?
Stress is a form of overload. It can happen when we feel unable to cope, or when we are under too much mental and emotional pressure.
The demands of keeping up with everything can be hard to manage. This may include technology, work or employment demands, friends and social life, as well as general day-to-day living. Looking after a home, family, children or elderly relatives, shopping, household needs and special occasions all take time and energy.
Things around us can move at such a pace now. It can feel like a helter-skelter, and yet, somehow, we have to stay on board, hang on in there and maintain balance in all aspects of life, including the personal.
It’s about knowing yourself and what you want from life, and also what you are prepared to put up with. Sometimes simplicity is best. Recognising this, if it feels right, and seeing how to move ahead is important.
How do you know if you are stressed?
Stress is part of the “fight or flight” response, and some stress can be healthy for motivation to get things done. However, the challenge comes when there is too much, no relief or let-up, and always somehow more to be accomplished, usually with a time limit.
Things can also change dramatically in life. The loss of a loved one, moving home, new bosses at work with fresh agendas, divorce and redundancy are a few reasons.
If you are tired, overwhelmed, lacking energy, feeling out of control or experiencing physical symptoms, then stress may be affecting your life.
You need to see what is causing the stress, what impact it’s having and how much it is affecting you, as well as how. Being aware is important.
What can you do?
- Find ways of minimising what is affecting you.
- Go for a swim to relax, get physically active and feel freer.
- Take time out in nature to connect with the environment and clear your head.
- Go out with friends or have people round for a simple supper, a drink and a laugh.
- Spend time with pets or take the dog for a walk.
- Stress comes in different levels and can impact us at different times in different ways.
