What is therapeutic coaching?

There are as many approaches to therapy and coaching as there are therapists and coaches. We all come with our own styles, tools, models and methodologies and each and every one is equal in value – it's really about finding who feels most aligned with where you are at in your journey.

This article aims to give a broad overview of what 'therapeutic coaching' is to help you consider if this type of coaching might be what you're looking for to support you.

Purist coaching is very much focused on future goals and getting from A to B quicker with someone else than you would alone. But, therapeutic coaching, whilst also about moving forward, is namely interested in moving forward with healing, shifting or releasing the things that may be holding you back or standing in your way.

It's difficult to articulate it, but if I were pushed, purist coaching is likely to lean more towards the practical and tangible aspects of life and therapeutic coaching more towards your inner world; shifting your patterns, behaviours, and emotions.

Also, unlike talking therapy, which can involve talking in detail about past events and how they made you feel, therapeutic coaching acknowledges and gives space for the past whilst actively 'doing the work' to intentionally and purposefully move forward. It is very nuanced and of course, all approaches have equal value, so it is about finding who you feel is a good fit for you!

For me, therapeutic coaching is an active process of releasing things no longer meant for you, to enable you to evolve and step into the truth of who you are, and to invite in your future goals and true desires from a space of alignment and presence. It is about well-being, contentment, alignment and more of what you want in life by shining a light of loving curiosity on yourself. It's a process of self-discovery and intentional evolution.

Therapeutic coaching is flexible, organic and intuitive, depending on what the client might bring to a session and so I am working with the wonderfully unique person in front of me in a wonderfully unique way. It might be NLP, it might be conscious coaching conversations, it might be dynamic hypnotherapy, it might be learning new tools to support your growth, it might be inner child work. Of course, it all depends on what works best for you as the client, led by my expertise and intuition as the space holder.

How can therapeutic coaching help?

I've listed here five things that you might expect when entering into a therapeutic coaching relationship:

1. Gaining a new perspective on yourself

Recognising the patterns and behaviours that may no longer be serving you and learning more about yourself. You may feel even clearer about the truth of who you are, your desires, and how you want to show up in the world as more of you!

2. Letting go of the things that are holding you back from your desires

Through using tools such as dynamic hypnotherapy (inner child work, reframes and regressions, for example) and conscious coaching conversations to start to peel back the layers of conditioning.

3. Building more presence and awakening consciousness

An opportunity to remember that everything (past, present and future) is happening now and the importance of mindfulness in our lives.

4. Acquiring the skills to 'hold yourself'

Realisations about tools you can use regularly to support your growth and expansion such as journaling practices, self-soothing, somatic tools, tuning in to self, using emotions as navigation, meditation, and so on.

5. Creating a future that you are the author of

And taking full responsibility for yourself and how you show up in the world; stepping into more choice and personal power - bringing in more of what you want, your truth; more joy, more freedom, more abundance, more love…

Here are a few examples of the types of areas that therapeutic coaching can support with. And to be clear, I don't see any of these things as 'problems' that need 'fixing', all just beautiful signposts that something isn't in alignment with your truth:

  • wanting more self-expression
  • relationship issues
  • overthinking
  • overwhelm
  • a sense of lack in any area
  • anxiety
  • habits or behaviours that no longer support you
  • boundary-setting and people-pleasing
  • patterns of procrastination or lack of motivation
  • self-worth
  • self-esteem

This is about releasing what is no longer serving you and allowing you to step into more of your truth and bring in more - more abundance, more joy, more freedom.

If you are committed to your journey of intentional, purposeful, wide awake and heart-led living, and are deeply called to breathe more like into the fire in your belly, then therapeutic coaching might be for you. Book a free discovery call or email to request an information pack to find out more.
