Balanced action - navigating high performance with well-being

In a world that constantly pushes us towards the next milestone, the balance between achieving high performance and maintaining our well-being can often feel like a tightrope walk. This week I’m focussing on the essence of balanced action, a principle that creates the harmony between pushing the boundaries of success and nurturing our personal health and happiness.

At the core of balanced action is the understanding that our drive for success should not come at the expense of our well-being. The pursuit of goals, whether in business or personal life, demands energy, focus, and resilience. However, sustaining these qualities requires a foundation of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.


The myth of 'more is better’

In the hustle culture that most of us are immersed in, there’s a prevailing myth that more hours, more effort, and more sacrifices equate to more success. Yet, this approach often leads us to fatigue and burnout, therefore diminishing our capacity for creativity, decision-making, and overall performance. Balanced action on the other hand invites us to challenge this myth, advocating for a strategic holistic approach, where efficiency and well-being go hand-in-hand.

Here are my strategies for balancing high performance with well-being:

Understand what truly matters to you. Distinguish between your urgent and important tasks, and learn to say no to demands that distract from your core objectives. When you set clear and healthy boundaries around work and your personal time, you can maintain your energy and focus.

Happy high performance is not about constant action but also includes strategic periods of rest and recharge. Incorporate short pit-stop breaks during your day and longer periods of disconnect to recover and rejuvenate. Remember, rest is not a reward; it’s a part of the process, so start napping!

Engage in and commit to practices that ground you in the present and offer perspectives on your actions and decisions. Whether it’s through meditation, journaling, or simply taking a moment to connect to your breath. Mindfulness enhances emotional regulation and clarity of mind. 

A healthy body supports a healthy mind. Daily movement, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep are non-negotiable for sustaining high performance and long-term success. They not only enhance your physical health but also improve cognitive function and stress resilience. Think about what changes you can make to your environment to encourage you to move more often, reach for healthy snacks instead of processed ones and eat slower, more sociable meals with others.

Our relationships provide support, joy, and a sense of belonging. Ensure you’re investing in relationships with those that uplift and support you, both within and outside of the workplace.


The power of example

As leaders, entrepreneurs, or professionals, our approach to balancing happy high performance with well-being sets a precedent for our teams and those we influence. By embodying balanced action, we not only enhance our own lives but also inspire others to adopt a more holistic approach to their longevity and success.

After all, true success is measured not just by the heights we reach but by the balance we maintain on our journey there.
