A-Z guide to finding work you love - letter F
F stands for fear.
At some stage on your career journey, if you're trying to find work you love you will encounter fear. The thing separates people who are successful in changing career or finding work they love from the people who don't, is how they handle that fear.
What is your fear? It could be fear of success, fear of choosing the wrong path, fear of what other people might say to you... whatever it is, it is important that you get some perspective.
Think back to the things you've done in the past for which there was no guarantee of success - choosing a partner, buying a house or perhaps sharing a house with friends... was there a guarantee of success for any of these? Probably not. Even if they didn't work out, you still went ahead and did them.
One of the biggest fears we have is that we won't be able to handle things if they go wrong. Again, think back to the things you did in the past where there was no guarantee of success. Perhaps they didn't go so well, but you handled it and most importantly, learnt from it. The same thing applies to your career decisions. You can handle them when they don't go well. The important thing is that you can bounce back, dust yourself down and go again by trying a different approach or pathway. Of course it's important that the decisions you make are wise ones - this is where a good career coach can play their part. But it's important to accept that a good career path is rarely straightforward.
When it comes to making good career decisions, it's important that you are resilient. Somebody once said that career success isn't about what you achieve, but what you overcome.
