Feeling overwhelmed by career choices? Start here
Choosing a career can feel more overwhelming than ever. The world of work has changed dramatically over the last few decades, and career paths are no longer as straightforward as they once seemed.
While having more choice creates exciting opportunities, it can also make decision-making much harder, particularly if you're someone who naturally overthinks your options.
If you're feeling stuck, here are a few practical ideas you can start using straight away.
1. If you're feeling overwhelmed by too many options
- Set a timer for two minutes and write down between two and four jobs or careers you would genuinely like to explore.
- Look inward rather than outward. When we focus on the huge number of careers available, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Instead, begin with yourself. Think about your values, strengths, interests and the type of work that gives you energy.
- Understanding yourself is often the best place to start.
If you'd rather begin by exploring possibilities, speak to people whose jobs you're curious about. Finding out what their work is really like can help you decide whether it fits with what matters most to you.
2. If you have a habit of catastrophising
- Practise trusting yourself. If you tend to imagine the worst-case scenario, pause and ask yourself whether there may be another way of looking at the situation.
- Remember, you've successfully navigated challenges throughout your life already, and that's something worth recognising.
- Don't forget to consider the possible benefits of your options. Challenge your thinking by asking yourself:
What's the best that could happen?
How might I feel if this worked out well?
3. How to overcome procrastination
- Remember that many career decisions aren't permanent. It's becoming increasingly common for people to change jobs or careers throughout their working lives.
- Developing flexibility and resilience can be just as valuable as choosing the "perfect" career first time.
- Break your goals into short-, medium- and long-term actions. Setting realistic, manageable steps makes progress feel much more achievable and gives you opportunities to celebrate each milestone along the way.
- It can also help to map out your route into the type of work you'd like to do. Having a simple action plan, together with a friend or family member who can encourage you and keep you accountable, often makes it easier to keep moving forward.
Finally, try to be kinder to yourself.
When we're facing uncertainty, it's easy to fall into critical self-talk:
"I should be doing this."
"I should have worked this out by now."
"If only I was..."
That inner critic rarely helps us move forward.
Instead, put on some music that lifts your mood, grab a notebook (or your favourite digital note-taking app) and start writing down your possibilities. You don't need to have all the answers today. Sometimes simply giving yourself permission to explore is the first step towards finding a career that feels right for you.
