Mindset management from employed to self-employed business

When you’re employed, you have a role and responsibilities – a job description. You are told what to do daily and know the expectations of you. You will have ready-made boundaries with policies, set procedures for most eventualities and hopefully support from above, below and sideways peers too.

When you move into becoming self-employed as a business owner, that changes dramatically and suddenly (unless you have worked part-time in both as you transition across as I did).

Self-employment requires accounting and finance management, other practical knowledge and insights. It requires you to:

  • Set your own policies and boundaries like pricing, payment and more.
  • Create your own procedures and expectationsof yourself, customers and providers.
  • Enhance your rapport-building and communication skills.

You rely on yourself in all areas. It can be a 24/7 commitment and responsibility. Not the hours but the ideas, the list of things to do or people to engage, responsibilities and perhaps different roles you hold.

Now you are a business owner too, so making money is crucial, it's your income. This is another mindset shift that can hold professionals like counsellors, accountants, and shop owners from starting their own businesses. It’s also essential to balance the values you envisioned with the actual work required to run the business successfully.

Example: The mindset, for a familiar example to me and maybe yourself, is becoming a self-employed counsellor.

Helpful, compassionate, caring, supportive, person-centred, encouraging … To also being assertive, confident, public-facing, purposeful, boundaried and professional, accurate and careful of legalities with even more responsibilities than before, more pressures and, yes, more stress.

However, the benefits are immense too and these are part of your mindset management - looking at the positives, not the natural tendency to look at problems to find solutions your mind will automatically do!

  • You do it your way, a better way, you left for a reason!
  • You already have experience, skills and insights to help you move into self-employment business status.
  • You have the drive and motivation or you wouldn’t be here, trying!
  • You have ideas and purpose.

Yet, perhaps you don’t yet havea clear direction or action plan, a pathway to success, clarity on your particular services - niching, USPs, clientele, marketing and social media engagement, contacting, chasing and engaging people daily, selling and buying services, wariness of business politics, expectations, limitations and communication skills?

This is where mindset management, NLP coaching, and hypnotherapy services can help. These techniques along with hypnotherapy work with your unconscious mind to address hidden triggers, past-created limitations, and unrealistic expectations. They also help you manage others' values and needs while staying true to your own.

This is what mindset management does – it helps you to transition to change your mind as you change your life.
