How to train your mind to reach your goals
What is visualisation?
Visualisation is the practice of creating vivid mental images in your mind’s eye. Research shows that imagining an experience activates many of the same brain regions as actually living it. That’s why visualising ourselves reaching our goals, or experiencing confidence or joy, can literally create changes in our brain and shift how we feel in the moment.
Even elite athletes use mental rehearsal to boost performance, and one study even found that imagining muscle movements can lead to strength gains, purely through neural activation. That’s how powerful your mind is. Your brain doesn’t fully distinguish between what’s imagined and what’s real, and that’s something we can utilise to create positive changes in our lives.
Because of the deep connection between the mind and body, we can use the power of visualisation to help us reach our goals. When you consistently imagine yourself achieving your goal, your brain begins to interpret it as something truly possible, even likely. This mental rehearsal can help shift your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in a way that aligns with your vision, making it more likely to become your reality.
How does visualisation work?
There are many theories proposing why visualisation can be a great tool to help us reach our goals, including:
- Mindset shifting: When you visualise yourself achieving a goal, you start to rewire how you think about yourself and your capabilities. You’re literally creating new neural pathways that say, “This is possible for me.” That quiet shift can change how you approach challenges in everyday life.
- Selective attention: Once your brain is focused on a desired outcome – like getting stronger, feeling more at peace, or reaching a personal goal – it becomes more alert to anything that supports that outcome. You might start noticing new opportunities, resources, or patterns that were invisible before, just because your mind is now primed to see them.
- Regulating the nervous system: One often overlooked benefit of visualisation is how it can help regulate your nervous system. When you picture yourself in an empowering situation – and really feel into that – it sends a message to your body that you are safe. And when your nervous system feels safe, you’re more likely to take action, speak up, or pursue goals that once felt out of reach. A regulated nervous system supports motivation, clarity, and resilience – all essential when working toward something meaningful.
- The Law of Attraction: Many people find the concept of the Law of Attraction to be a powerful explanation for why visualisation works. It’s based on the idea that everything in the universe – including our thoughts and emotions – is made of energy, and that energy attracts energy on the same frequency. When we focus clearly on what we want and feel good about it, we’re creating an energetic match between ourselves and our desires. This can help bring opportunities, ideas, and people into our lives that align with that vision. Whether you see this as a universal law or simply the power of mindset and focus, it speaks to the importance of getting intentional about what we want to create – and backing that intention with feeling.
How to practise visualisation
Visualisation is a powerful tool that lets you experience your goals and dreams as if they are already happening. You can visualise in the morning to set the tone for the day, in the evening to wind down, or simply when you need to reconnect with your goal.
Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you get started:
- Find a quiet space: Minimise distractions and create a relaxing environment where you can focus fully.
- Set your intention: Get clear on what you want. Use as much detail as possible to make it real in your mind.
- Engage your senses: Build a vivid mental picture of your dream coming true, involving sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch – whatever makes it feel alive to you.
- Feel the emotion: This is the most important step. Feel the positive emotions – joy, gratitude, peace, excitement – as if your dream has already come true. Let those feelings rise and fill you in the present moment while you hold your vision in your mind’s eye.
- Repeat regularly: One time isn’t enough to create lasting change. Practise as often as you can, even for short periods of time.
- Let go: After visualising, release attachment to the outcome and trust that what you need is on its way.
Helpful tips to make visualisation even more powerful:
- Use music: Listening to uplifting music can really help you tap into elevated emotions and make your visualisation feel more powerful. Choose something that builds in energy and softens at the end to match the emotional journey.
- Try guided meditations: If you're not sure where to start, following a guided visualisation meditation can be really helpful, especially in the beginning
- Start small: Begin with just 5-10 minutes and build up over time. It’s better to be consistent with short sessions than to burn out trying to do too much.
Visualisation is not about pretending life is perfect – it’s about connecting to the part of you that knows change is possible. By seeing your dream life in your mind’s eye, feeling it in your body, and returning to that vision again and again, you start to become the person who is ready to live it.
Taking action towards your goal is still a must, but visualisation is a powerful practice that helps you create your desired outcome. Be gentle with yourself. Go slowly. And most of all, let yourself believe that beautiful things are possible for you.
