The difference between impossible and improbable

Setting personal goals can be a lot like embarking on a wild adventure. You start with a destination in mind, armed with a map full of dreams and aspirations. But somewhere along the way, you might encounter the seemingly insurmountable mountains of 'impossible' and the vast deserts of 'improbable.' This thinking came to me while watching an episode of The Big Bang Theory where Sheldon corrects Penny for saying he's impossible, to that it would be more correct to say he's improbable. It got me pondering on the differences between the two things.

Dreaming big: Distinguishing between impossible and improbable

Imagine this: You've decided that your dearest wish is to get a unicorn for your backyard. It's safe to say that this goal might fall into the 'impossible' category. Sorry to break that news!

On the other hand, 'improbable' goals are those that make you pause and think, "Well, it's a long shot, but with some clever planning and a sprinkle of luck, who knows?"

Perhaps another goal is to climb Mount Everest while juggling flaming torches and singing your favourite show tunes. Is it impossible? Well, in theory, no! It's improbable, but it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility. You'd need lots of practice, and money, maybe trained with a circus troupe and have a voice that can tame avalanches. But hey, there's no harm in belting out "Let It Go" on the mountainside if it keeps your spirits high, right?

Setting personal goals is about striking a balance between aiming high and staying grounded. Aim for the stars, but pack a parachute.

So, how do you embark on this epic quest of 'improbable' personal goal-setting without getting lost in the vast expanse of 'impossible'?

Fear not, for I have a treasure trove of practical tips to help you navigate the journey:

  • Define your north star: Just like any great adventure, you need a clear destination. Define your goal with precision. Instead of saying, "I want to be successful," say, "I want to increase my revenue by 30% within the next year."

Break it down: Goals are like puzzles – big and small pieces coming together to create a beautiful picture. Break down your larger goal into smaller, manageable tasks. Climbing a mountain is much less daunting when you focus on one step at a time.

  • Check your toolkit: Evaluate your skills, resources, and support system. Do you have the right gear for your journey? Are there fellow adventurers who can lend a hand? Remember, even Frodo had Samwise.

  • Banish the "I can't" goblin: The 'impossible' goblin loves to whisper self-doubt in your ear. Combat it with a dose of positive self-talk. Instead of saying, "I can't do it," say, "I haven't figured it out yet, but I'm getting there."

  • Hunt for magic beans: Seek inspiration and knowledge. Read about others who conquered their own versions of Everest. Seek advice from mentors and learn from their experiences.

  • Embrace imperfection: Perfection is a mythical creature. Embrace the messy, imperfect journey of progress. Remember, every great story has its plot twists and turns.

  • Celebrate mini victories: Each step forward is a triumph. Celebrate your mini victories along the way. Treat yourself to a cupcake or a dance party – you've earned it.

  • Walk the talk: Align your actions with your values. If your goal is to be environmentally conscious, make eco-friendly choices throughout your journey.

As you stand at the crossroads of impossible and improbable, remember that goal-setting is not just about reaching the destination; it's about the exhilarating journey itself. Whether you're aiming to build a business empire or learn to tango, the path you carve will be uniquely yours.
