If you want next year to feel different, start here
Every December, so many of us start repeating a version of the same hopeful promise: “Next year will be different.” This is the time when we become acutely aware of what we haven't managed to get done this year, what has stayed immovable and what we have repeated that we really wish we hadn't. It can make everything feel rather disappointing.
There are two things I ask you to consider at this point: one, focusing only on what you haven't done excludes what you have and damages your motivation, so it's a fairly fruitless exercise. And two, it's unlikely you can't make the changes you're looking to make and more likely that you've just not unlocked the 'how'.
Because the truth is, nothing actually changes until you do.
What does that actually mean when it comes to personal development?
What we see the most often in response to a desire for change is people trying to approach it with willpower, discipline, tighter routines, or a fresh set of goals. There is no doubt that those things can help in the short term. But, on their own, they aren't the answer. Because they don’t create the kind of deep, lasting shift that makes life genuinely feel different – because you are different.
Real change starts with clearly understanding who you are
This is the part of personal development that is so often overlooked – that change starts with understanding who you actually are. You can sign up to all the goal-setting plans in the world, but if you don't spend some time on self-discovery and understanding yourself, then it's just wasted surface-level effort.
Because most of us aren't operating out of who we really are. We are operating out of:
- the version we perform for others
- the version shaped by old expectations or childhood patterns
- the one moulded by our jobs, responsibilities, or – worst of all – our fears
And as long as that's where you're operating from, you're going to be stuck in the same old loops, behaviour patterns and repeating situations.
Why bother developing the connection to you?
Connection to the real you is what you need to make next year different. I’m talking about the real you - the one underneath all the layers. And when you reconnect with that version of yourself, things that once felt impossible start to soften and open up.
In reality, that looks like you:
- Stop sabotaging your finances because you finally understand the story behind your habits. Sometimes it's enough to see that the habits no longer serve you, and you'll just stop repeating them.
- Stop using numbing behaviours like alcohol, food, scrolling, and constant busyness because you can recognise what your emotions are really asking for.
- Make clearer decisions because you’re making choices for yourself from self-trust and self-belief instead of fear.
- Stop abandoning your needs and boundaries the moment things become uncomfortable.
- Start to feel like yourself again, authentically, joyfully and uncompromisingly, or, in some cases, for the first time ever.
Although all this might seem like something magical when it feels out of reach, there's nothing mystical about any of it. It’s not “manifesting harder.” It’s not willpower.
It doesn't require you to suddenly become a different person, take ice baths at 5 am, never have emotions, be less sensitive or be perfect. It’s self-knowledge. Awareness. Intuition. And the courage to look inward with honesty and meet what you find with self-compassion.
You can understand who you are beneath the noise, allowing you to create meaningful change that lasts longer than a few weeks in January.
Why now is the best time to start (not January)
Right in the here and now is actually the best moment to begin this process. Not January, when everything feels rushed, heavy, and already behind – and there is so much pressure to do the "new year, new you" stuff that really is just papering over the cracks.
Not in the middle of the festive overwhelm, when you’re stretched thin. But now, when you still have breathing space to reflect and set the foundations for how you want the next year to feel.
If you’ve been considering coaching, if you’ve been quietly wishing life felt different, or if you’ve been waiting for a sign or a “right time”, this is your moment to take the first step. If you’re reading this and something in you feels curious, hopeful, or ready, then this is the part of you that already knows it’s time to take that step.
You may not be clear on the “how” yet. And you probably won't feel ready or confident (no one does before taking action). You may even be scared of what change might mean. That’s healthy – it's how everyone feels. But with resilience coaching, you're not on your own.
Just remember, this process isn’t about becoming a different person. Resilience coaching is about becoming yourself again – with more clarity, confidence, and compassion than you’ve ever felt.
If you’re ready to explore this, explore your options for leaving what you no longer need and make next year what you actually want it to be. Your next chapter doesn’t start in January. It starts when you take the first step towards the real you.
