Mindful drinking during the festive season

With festive celebrations in full swing and social events filling up the calendar, alcohol will be flowing, leaving many of us feeling less than merry the morning after the night before.

While this time of year is often associated with happiness, celebration and connection, alcohol can sometimes leave people feeling physically drained or regretting things they may have said or done after drinking too much.

If you want to enjoy the celebrations without the unpleasant after effects, then read on for some useful tips on the dos and don’ts of festive drinking.

1. Don’t drink on an empty stomach

This is one of the most important rules if you wish to avoid a hangover. Food helps to slow the absorption of alcohol and can also reduce the chances of stomach irritation.

2. Choose your drinks wisely

Some drinks are more likely than others to contribute to the severity of a hangover.

Dark spirits and red wine tend to contain higher levels of compounds produced during fermentation than clearer spirits such as vodka and gin. Some people find that choosing simpler or clearer drinks helps them feel better the next day.

3. Try not to mix too many drinks

Mixing multiple types of alcohol throughout the evening may increase the likelihood of feeling unwell the next day. Sticking to one type of drink can sometimes help you keep track of how much you are consuming.

4. Drink water

Alcohol dehydrates the body, so it is important to drink water before, during and after consuming alcohol. Alternating between water and alcoholic drinks throughout the evening not only helps you stay hydrated but may also reduce the amount of alcohol you consume overall.

Know Your Limits

It is really important that you know your limits when drinking alcohol, especially in social or professional environments. If you are concerned about your behaviour when you are under the influence of alcohol, then the most sensible option is not to drink at all.

The festive season should leave you with good memories, not regrets. Looking after yourself, staying aware of your limits and making intentional choices can help you enjoy celebrations while still feeling your best the next day.
