Communication for true impact - 3 quick tips

Communication is so often taken for granted. We speak, therefore we are communicating – or so many of us believe.

Communication is about much more than words and tone. It includes body language, what is left unsaid and whether we are truly, actively listening to what is being spoken.

It goes beyond simply talking. Effective communication requires presence of mind and, sometimes, a change of habit.

Think back to a time when you felt you were truly being listened to. Now think of a time when you were not. What was the difference?

Being mindful of the words we speak and how we listen is not automatically as easy as it sounds. Let’s face it: you have been talking for years. It can help to prepare what you want to say and think about how best to express it.

It may sound strange, but like anything new you try, it takes a little time before it becomes second nature. However, raising your awareness of how you communicate and listen can pay dividends.

Mutual respect within a conversation can go a long way. Where could you apply this? With clients? With colleagues? In your personal relationships? I invite you to try.

How can you achieve this?

A quick-fire way to start thinking about your communication style is to consider my three tips below.

Know

Know the relevant facts before you speak. Stick to those facts and avoid stretching them or making up additional “facts”. Don’t over-dramatise what you need to say.

Avoid

Avoid assumptions, judgements, preconceptions and comparisons. Try to see with fresh eyes and listen with open ears. Be mindful and curious as you listen.

Think

Keep your thoughts relevant to the event, statement or situation being discussed. If you notice your mind wandering, gently redirect your attention. Focus on the thoughts that will support clear communication and help you achieve the outcome you seek.

There are many more ways to improve communication. These are simply three quick ideas to get you started.
