Are you ready to start dating?

Before you begin dating, it's worth taking a moment to ask yourself one simple question:

Am I ready to date?

Write down your answer and be completely honest.

The purpose of this exercise isn't to judge yourself or decide whether there's a right or wrong answer. It's simply an opportunity to reflect on where you are right now and whether you're emotionally ready to welcome someone new into your life.

Explore your first thoughts

Take a piece of paper and write Dating and Me at the top.

Now spend five to ten minutes writing down the first 10–15 words or phrases that come into your mind when you think about dating.

Don't think too hard about it. There are no right or wrong answers. Simply write whatever comes to mind, no matter how unexpected or surprising it may seem.

This can be a useful way of uncovering some of your deeper thoughts and feelings about dating and about yourself.

When you've finished, ask yourself:

  • Was there anything interesting or surprising on your list?
  • Did any words appear more than once or follow a particular theme?
  • Is there anything you'd like to explore further before you start dating?

Approach your answers with curiosity rather than judgement.

Ask yourself these questions

Now take a little more time to reflect on the following questions. Remember, nobody else needs to read your answers; they're simply for you.

  • What are you hoping to gain from dating?
  • How do you feel about yourself when it comes to dating?
  • How do you feel about being single?
  • Do you feel emotionally ready to move on from your last relationship?
  • What have you learned from your previous relationship?
  • Can you understand why your last relationship ended?
  • What positive lessons have you taken from that experience?
  • How will you know when you feel ready to start dating?
  • Are your expectations of dating realistic?

Reflect on your answers

Hopefully, answering these questions has helped you think positively about yourself and given you a clearer understanding of what you're looking for.

You may feel excited, optimistic and ready to meet new people. Equally, you may realise there are still a few things you'd like to work through before you begin dating again.

If that's the case, don't see it as a setback. Giving yourself a little more time can sometimes be the kindest thing you can do. Entering the dating world when you feel emotionally ready is more likely to lead to a positive experience for both you and the people you meet.

Now ask yourself again:

Am I ready to date?

A final thought

Try to enjoy each date for what it is, rather than worrying about where it might lead.

Not every date has to become a relationship to be worthwhile. Every conversation teaches you something about yourself, what you're looking for and the qualities that matter most to you.

Approach dating with curiosity, keep an open mind and remember that finding the right person is often a journey rather than a race.
