Connect with all your senses and get to know yourself better

Together, mind and body form one powerful communication system which sees continual interaction. We are often aware of what we are communicating externally but we may be less in touch with what's going on inside. And, even though our minds and bodies do interconnect and communicate with us all the time, we may not always pay attention to the messages!

Most of us are fortunate enough to have five senses: sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. Everyone's sense system is totally unique to them because people experience things differently. In NLP this forms part of what we call ‘our map of the world’. Imagine eating an apple – imagine what you see, hear, feel, taste and smell. If you try this activity with a friend and compare notes, you’ll find out just how much this can vary between two people.

If you start to tap into your senses and listen to what they tell you, far more information will be available to you. This will become apparent in your internal state as well as externally, in the way you communicate and connect with others and the world at large.

You can also take advantage of your senses to become more mindful and to savour the moment. This not only enables you to make the most of each moment but can also ground you and help you to tune in to what’s really happening. You’ll notice the experience in a very different way. Whether it’s something simple like washing your hands, taking part in a meeting, communicating with a partner or just looking out of a window – you’ll start to really engage and understand more about how you think and feel about things.

One of the most powerful techniques that NLP Coaches use to help people make change is visualisation. Our senses can tell us about the present and the past, but they can also be used to help us imagine how things could be in the future. This is when real change can take place. If you can imagine how things can be in the future, using different senses, you begin to allow your unconscious and conscious mind to enter into a dialogue. You start to create a picture of the future as if you were actually there, experiencing it. This technique is highly powerful.

Working with an NLP Coach can help you to explore feelings, reveal patterns and really listen to what your senses are telling you. Knowing and understanding yourself better can have far-reaching benefits from being more present and in the moment to communicating with confidence, setting and achieving goals and generally enjoying life more.

Are you ready to make sense of what’s going on beneath the surface?
