About me

My role as a coach is to support individuals who have experienced or witnessed sexual misconduct or harassment in the workplace to consider their voice options before they commit to a particular form of action.  Exploring thoughts and feelings in a safe, confidential space without the need to commit to action can be transformational for individuals and result in more impactful outcomes. 

Most often, the only option within organisations is to voice formally to a manager. However, given the heightened emotions and increased sensitivity that accompany such situations, alongside the feelings of isolation and shame that are also common, speaking out can feel like an undesirable option. Yet, to take back control of a disempowering situation can be life-changing. Even if voice is not the outcome of the coaching, choosing to remain silent or walk away from the situation is a considered form of action and results in better wellbeing for the individual. 

I am a full-time academic at Sheffield University Management School focusing on understanding how people speak up in the workplace. Prior to becoming an academic in 2012, I had a varied career working for a number of large private and public sector organisations as a management consultant and operations manager specialising in upward communication in the workplace.  I have been a coach since 2004 and have developed a theoretical framework which helps us work through options.

Whilst I am grateful that my coaching offer is not borne out of lived experience of sexual harassment and sexual misconduct, I am familiar with feeling unseen and unheard, not knowing who to talk to, doubting myself, feeling shameful when thinking that I might have brought about situations through my own doing, and being fearful of not being believed. I know how this feels and I don't want anyone to feel alone, unseen and unheard during difficult times in their lives.

Being impactful comes from feeling powerful. That can be difficult in hierarchical organisations where there are layers of management with sometimes very obvious reminders that you are less powerful than those more senior. 

But there are different types of power and we will work to identify the source of yours. Whilst the old adage "knowledge is power" is true, it's not enough to get your voice heard. It takes skill to articulate precisely what you know and the changes you want to see . 

We will focus on identifying the source of your power. We are all infinitely powerful. Yes we need to be courageous too, but I can help you find that power to voice. 

There is so much evidence to show that remaining silent is bad for our health, resulting in stress and burnout, absence from work, long-term sick leave, poor mental health and episodes of breakdown. 

Voicing provides such benefits to self-esteem and confidence. There is nothing we can't achieve if we feel good about ourselves and capable of achieving the things we want to. 

It may seem as if voicing is only a small thing, but learning how to do it well will serves us for the rest of our lives.
