Matthew Barnes-Smith: Coaching & Mentoring for Young Men
Coaching & Mentoring for Young Men:
Some questions for you or your son...
Do you struggle to be yourself? Do you suffer from low confidence and belief in yourself? Do you worry what people think of you? Do you often feel anxious, worried or depressed? Do you feel overwhelmed with aspects of your life? Do you feel you are not in control of your life? Does change scare you? Do you feel like there is no one around that understands you? Do you struggle to find the right support? Do you find certain social situations difficult? Do you feel a bit lost, worried or confused?
Firstly, if you have answered yes to one or more of the above questions, that is completely OK and does not mean there is anything wrong with you. It simply means you know the time is right for change, and the support I offer may be right for you or your son.
WHAT do you provide?
1:1 support for young men aged between 16-24:
- To support you/them with their mental, emotional and physical health
- A safe and confidential space to talk and express how you/they feel, think and see the world: without fear of judgement, criticism or ridicule.
- To encourage personal development whilst also providing an outlet for any worries or concerns in their lifeT
- To empower you/them to take responsibility for their life and choices.
WHY do you do what you do?
The pressure on young people to ‘achieve’ and ‘be someone or something’ has never been greater. We live in a world where the ‘perfect life’ is constantly on display, which massively distorts the expectations that young people have on themselves. Add to this the pressures of fitting in, growing up and planning a future, means truly defining what it is that makes the you happy and fulfilled, a difficult and sometimes disheartening process. This is proved by the increase in mental health issues amongst today’s younger generation.
Adding to this, from a young age, men are often told that ‘being a man’ means you need to be tough, strong, and show no weaknesses. Emotions and feelings are left unacknowledged, bottled-up, and left to manifest. These stereotypes associated with “being a man” can be harmful for young males as they don’t allow the space for the individual to fully express themselves and their emotions, and this will have a massive impact on the quality of their relationship with themselves and others.
MY AIM is to intervene early enough in a young man's life, and to engage in a conversation around what life means on their terms. This way, they can begin to see the world from a confident position and make decisions in their life that empowers their identity.

"Matt has a wonderful enthusiasm and positive approach to life coupled with the ability to really understand the pressures of today’s society which makes him an ideal person to help young people. He has helped my son grow in confidence, shown him how to manage his emotions, how to present himself and communicate more effectively with people and how to overcome challenging issue that he finds worrying. He has provided an environment for him to be able to discuss his anxieties and problems without embarrassment or judgement. As a result of the sessions he now believes he can achieve his ambitions and dreams and has put into place the necessary building blocks to fulfil these both on a vocational and social level. As a parent I would recommend Matt without hesitation." S Brown
