Why work and personal life are more connected than you think
It is interesting how successful professionals in the corporate world are often the people who feel the most unfulfilled or who crave change the most, despite appearing to have a successful career and a great life.
It is also interesting how rare it is for people who are unhappy at work to be completely fulfilled in other important areas of life, whether that is family, relationships, friendships, personal growth or health.
Interesting, perhaps, but not surprising.
Can we really separate work and home?
Many of us behave differently at work than we do in our personal lives. We often try to create a tidy separation between the office and home.
Unfortunately, that separation often fails.
Have you ever arrived home feeling tired, stressed or overwhelmed and found it difficult to switch off? Or perhaps you've experienced personal challenges that affected your concentration, productivity or mood at work?
Most of us have.
Trying to compartmentalise these different parts of our lives rarely works, especially now that we're so easily contactable and carry much of our work and personal lives around with us on a device that's rarely more than a few feet away.
We take ourselves everywhere we go
Whether you're in the office, at home, spending time with friends or attending a networking event (hands up if you love small talk!), you're still the same person.
You're guided by the same mind, emotions, beliefs, values and patterns of thinking wherever you are.
It follows naturally that if you're feeling deeply dissatisfied in one area of life, that dissatisfaction can begin to influence other areas too.
One positive change can create others
One of the things many of my clients notice is that when they begin improving one aspect of their life, positive changes often start to appear elsewhere.
Again, this isn't particularly surprising when you consider that you have one mind and one brain, regardless of where your attention is focused.
For many clients, however, this realisation is a genuine breakthrough.
Once they understand how connected different areas of their lives really are, momentum towards a more fulfilling life often begins to build.
Why life coaching is about more than work
Perhaps that's one of the reasons why the word life comes before coach.
For me, coaching isn't simply about helping someone get promoted or change jobs, although those outcomes are often a welcome by-product of a shift in mindset.
Neither is it just about becoming more confident socially or finding the right relationship.
It's about helping people develop new ways of thinking that enable them to feel more fulfilled and realise more of their potential across every area of their lives.
Because when one part of life improves, it's often the beginning of positive change in many others.
