Somatic coaching: a mind and body approach to career change

Feeling stuck, restless, or anxious in your career can be deeply frustrating – especially when you can’t clearly explain why. You may sense that something needs to change, yet feel unsure about what that change should be or how to move towards it.

Why a purely cognitive approach doesn't always work

Many people try to resolve this by thinking harder: weighing pros and cons, analysing options, or seeking traditional career coaching or therapy. While these approaches can certainly be helpful, they tend to focus primarily on the mind. What is often overlooked is the information coming from the body and the nervous system – signals that can offer powerful guidance when it comes to career decisions.

Somatic, body-based career coaching works with both mind and body, but places the body at the centre of the process. By slowing down, tuning inward, noticing sensations, movement, and emotional responses, and paying close attention to what’s happening in the nervous system, we can access a deeper level of clarity. From this place, what we truly want, and the steps needed to move towards it can begin to reveal themselves more naturally.

What is somatic coaching?

Somatic coaching engages your whole intelligence – mind and body together. Instead of focusing only on thoughts or mental strategies, it brings attention to the body, noticing sensations like tight shoulders, a constricted throat, or butterflies in the stomach. These physical signals often carry valuable insight about what’s happening beneath the surface.

By observing and allowing these sensations while breathing and moving, you help calm your nervous system and create space for transformation. Tension, emotional blocks, or feelings of being “stuck” can begin to release, and clarity naturally emerges. New insights, truths, and next steps become more visible.

Much like the idea of “trusting your gut,” somatic coaching helps you access your inner guidance, quiet overthinking, and move toward choices that feel authentic and aligned.

Who can benefit from somatic career coaching?

Somatic career coaching can be valuable to many, such as:

  • individuals looking for a more aligned career to their values and goals
  • jobseekers searching for their next career opportunity
  • people feeling stuck, anxious or unhappy at work and looking for clarity in how to resolve challenging work situations
  • anyone who has had limited success with cognitive methods of coaching and is looking for a more holistic approach in career and life coaching
  • those interested in tapping into the deeper wisdom and magnetism of the body

My story

For ten years, I worked in management at Apple. For much of that time, I genuinely enjoyed my role. However, towards the end, it became clear that I had outgrown it and was starting to feel increasingly stuck. Despite this awareness, the idea of leaving felt overwhelming. It was a well-paid, respected position at one of the most successful companies in the world.

Although I had already trained as a somatic body-based coach and felt strongly drawn towards this work, it didn’t seem like the “sensible” option. Moving into a relatively unknown (though growing) field felt risky and illogical.

When I stopped trying to reason my way through the decision and instead turned my attention inward, something shifted. By listening to my body – the heaviness in my stomach, the tension in my shoulders, and the emotions beneath them, I accessed a deep sense of knowing. It became clear that staying in my corporate role was no longer an option, and that I wanted to contribute in a different way.

Because I already had the training and qualifications, I was able to continue exploring this decision through somatic practices over the following weeks. By working with my body and nervous system, I reached a point where the path forward felt grounded rather than forced. The next steps didn’t come from pressure or overthinking – they emerged organically from this body-based inquiry.

Eventually, I made the career change I had been avoiding. Looking back, I’m certain that I wouldn’t have been able to do this had I relied solely on a cognitive approach. Today, I can honestly say that I do work that I truly love.

A five-minute somatic meditation to do anytime you feel stuck

If you're feeling at a crossroads in your career and want to tap into your full mind and body potential, one practical step you can take is to tune into your body via somatic meditation or body scan.

Put on some emotive (I prefer instrumental-only) music and simply begin to move your body. As you do this, begin to scan your body for any noticeable sensations, emotions or energies.

As you move and begin to notice what you feel, just stay with the sensation and breathe into it. For example, if you begin to feel anxiety in your belly, as much as you can, just stay with it, breathe through it, and continue moving your body. You will find that after 1-2 minutes of focusing on this area, the sensation begins to dissolve. It may move to a different area of your body – in which case, repeat the process. Most of the time, repeating this process a few times will bring you to a place of calm, peace and reset your nervous system.

From here, you can bring to your mind the issue you are facing in your career, and with a calm, regulated nervous system, clarity behind your next steps or solutions can often begin to develop. It’s your practice, and your time to really explore your body and all its insightful sensations.

A holistic approach to career change

If you’re feeling stuck in your career or facing uncertainty in another area of your life, somatic coaching may offer a way forward that you haven’t yet explored. By learning to listen to your body and regulate your nervous system, it becomes possible to move out of stuckness, gain clarity, and move towards a career that truly fulfils you.
