Importance of self-confidence

The dictionary definition of self-confidence is:

"A feeling of trust in one's abilities, qualities and judgement."

The Counselling Centre at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign defines self-confidence as:

"Having a positive attitude, but with realistic views."

They also note that a self-confident person has a general sense of control over their own life and believes they can achieve what they plan and expect.

Confidence vs arrogance

There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance.

The key here is to have a positive attitude but with realistic views. If you've read any self-development books, you may know that many will tell you to think positively and you will attract things into your life.

However, I am sure that if you were to mention this to friends and family, some would question this by saying: "If you imagine yourself to be a millionaire without action, does this mean you will become a millionaire?" But this is an example of having a positive attitude, with unrealistic views - i.e. if you do not take the necessary action, you will not get the desired results.

The impact of self-confidence at work

You may convince yourself that you're not good enough for:

  • That promotion.
  • A new project.
  • A bigger client.
  • The next stage in your career.

Instead, you simply accept your current position, income and circumstances.

However, with an increase in self-confidence, you will begin to look outside of the box; you will begin to believe in your abilities and open yourself up by setting higher standards, targets and goals for yourself and your business. This, together with a positive attitude, will begin to attract more of the right opportunities in your life.

The impact on your personal life

In your personal life, you will become a happier person as you begin to fulfil the things that you most desire. You become a nicer person to be around, and people enjoy your company more as you learn to be stress-free and you begin to have more energy.

Developing self-confidence can also increase your:

  • Passion.
  • Motivation.
  • Resilience.
  • Ability to influence others.
  • Overall wellbeing.

Working with an Executive Coach will allow you to overcome your limiting beliefs/barriers, enabling you to become a self-confident person who has a positive attitude, setting and achieving goals at a higher level.
