Managing challenging people with confidence

When life coaches work with people in management and leadership positions, one of the key issues the majority of clients bring to their coaching sessions is how to manage challengingpeople and challenging situations.

It is a constant topic, regardless of seniority, and it can seriously undermine a person's confidence in their ability to be an effective manager or leader. While it is a common concern, every individual's experience and understanding of that experience is unique.

Understanding the challenge

There is, of course, no simple answer to such a complex issue.

However, people can learn tools, techniques and strategies that improve their confidence and performance when dealing with difficult situations.

Perhaps most importantly, they can learn to unpick exactly what it is about certain people or situations that they personally find challenging. From there, they can begin to develop new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving that help them respond with greater confidence and effectiveness.

Building confidence through coaching

One approach to coaching in these situations is to be eclectic, drawing on a wide range of learning and development techniques.

These may include:

  • Coaching techniques
  • Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP)
  • Communication skills
  • The effective use of language

Many life coaches also use coaching sessions as a safe environment in which clients can practise real-life scenarios that have been causing concern.

After all, practice helps build confidence.

Developing new ways of thinking

Learning to deal confidently with challenging people and situations is a process.

It involves understanding the self-limiting beliefs we bring into these situations, reflecting on previous experiences and identifying what worked well and what didn't.

By breaking experiences down into smaller elements, we can begin to understand the links between our thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

From there, it becomes a process of rebuilding.

Creating change that lasts

By working through these small elements one by one, clients can develop into more confident managers and leaders.

As new beliefs, habits and behaviours develop, people begin to notice a change not only in how they think, but also in how they present themselves and, ultimately, in the outcomes they achieve.

Having the opportunity to practise these new approaches in a confidential, supportive and safe environment gives clients the confidence to become the leaders they aspire to be.

Developing leadership confidence

Alongside these coaching techniques, clients also learn practical skills such as preparation and planning, presenting themselves professionally, using confident language and communicating more effectively.

Through this comprehensive coaching process, people learn how to demonstrate leadership and remain in control of challenging situations.

Feeling in control changes everything.

It creates a positive mindset.

It strengthens self-belief.

It replaces uncertainty with the confidence to say:

"I can do this."
"I can manage challenging people and challenging situations."

Why coaching makes the difference

You can, of course, learn many of these skills during a training course. However, coaching offers something different.

Rather than telling people what to do, coaching encourages greater self-awareness, helping individuals discover their own solutions and develop approaches that genuinely work for them.

It is because clients develop these new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving for themselves that the learning is far more likely to last.

The skill of the coach lies in asking the right questions and creating the opportunities for meaningful change.

So, are you ready to challenge yourself?

Are you ready to improve your ability to manage challenging people and challenging situations?
