How to avoid burnout as a business owner

Have you had enough?

Have you fallen out of love with your business?

Do any of these phrases sound familiar?

"I can't do this anymore."

"I'm worn out."

"Maybe I should just get a job."

"I'm working all the time and nothing seems to be changing."

Are you juggling work and family, struggling to switch off and constantly worrying about money?

Perhaps you're not sleeping properly. You're skipping meals, not exercising, and self-care has disappeared completely. You feel snappy, exhausted, overwhelmed and wonder whether it's time to give up.

Recognise the signs of burnout

Take a deep breath. If this sounds familiar, the signs are pointing towards burnout.

The good news is that burnout is incredibly common among entrepreneurs, business owners and self-employed people.

Many of us experience it at some point. The important thing is recognising it early and taking positive action. Here are some of the strategies I've found most helpful.

Make self-care a priority

Looking after yourself isn't a luxury; it's essential.

  • Sleep well
  • Eat well
  • Exercise
  • Rest
  • Recharge
  • Refocus
  • Put yourself first for a change

Without you, your business can't thrive.

Schedule time to do nothing

Yes, really. At least once a week, schedule an hour in your diary to do absolutely nothing productive.

  • Go for a walk
  • Run a bath
  • Read a book
  • Have a beauty treatment
  • Give yourself permission to stop.

Set better boundaries

Block out dedicated time for work, family and yourself.

Make appointments with yourself just as you would for an important client.

Protect those appointments.

Switch off

Choose a time each evening to switch off your laptop, put your phone away and step away from social media.

Spend time with your family or simply spend time being yourself again.

Learn to say no

When you're already under pressure, it's perfectly acceptable to say no.

Be clear. Be consistent.

Stop giving away so much of your valuable time and energy.

Bring the fun back

Where has the fun gone?

Spend time with people you care about.

Watch a film. Go out for lunch. Do something that reminds you that life exists beyond your business.

If you're stuck in a rut

Sometimes the answer isn't working harder.

It's thinking differently.

Ask your clients, your followers or other business owners for ideas. Or work with a coach who can help you see opportunities that are difficult to spot on your own.

Remember why you started

Why did you start your business in the first place?

Where are you trying to get to?

If your mind feels full, especially at bedtime, grab a pen and paper and write everything down.

Get the thoughts out of your head.

Once you've completed your brain dump, you'll often find it much easier to organise your ideas, prioritise your next steps and reconnect with your original purpose.

Find your passion again

With greater clarity comes renewed focus.

Working with a coach can help you organise your thoughts, create a realistic plan and regain the excitement you once had for your business.

Most importantly...

  • Be realistic.
  • Be kind to yourself.
  • Don't expect perfection.

If any of this has resonated with you, don't be afraid to ask for help.

Everyone needs support, accountability and encouragement at different stages of life and business.

Sometimes all it takes is someone to help you find your direction, regain your clarity and rediscover your confidence.

And that's often where your next chapter begins.
