A - Z guide to finding work you love - letter P

Welcome back to the A-Z guide to finding work you love, where P stands for... procrastination.

You know how it is when you have something important to do, it's so easy to put it off, whether it's revising for an exam, going to the gym or maybe taking action towards finding work you love.

I always think it's amazing that when you have something important to do, tasks, like tidying your desk or watching daytime TV can seem so appealing.

So what can you do to avoid procrastination?

I'll share with you a couple of things that I do to avoid procrastination. One thing is to ask myself why the task is important to me. How will it benefit me? Then I ask myself what will happen if I don't take action. How will I feel if I do nothing at all? How will I feel if I do take action?

I then hope that this will motivate me to take action. Quite often, if I take no action, it may be because the task is ultimately not that important to me. My 'why' needs to be really strong for me to take action.

The other thing I might do is to reward myself if I complete the activity that I intend to do. So I may say to myself that once I complete the activity I will buy myself a takeaway. Or perhaps I won't eat lunch until I have completed the task. As you can tell, food is a great motivator for me!

So think about what you can do to avoid procrastination. You could even think about positive affirmations that you can say to yourself to motivate you to take action. Keep trying out different strategies. Some will work, some won't. For me, it's about thinking about the 'why' and rewarding myself.

So why do you want to go through a career transition? If things are exactly the same as they are now this time next year, how would you feel? If you find what motivates you to find a career you love, you will get there much quicker than you'd imagine.

So P stands for procrastination.
