3 ways to take some of the stress out of running your own business

Running your own business can be massively rewarding - and it can also be pretty stressful! Here are 3 ways to help restore a bit of work life balance and help you to keep enjoying what you do.

1. Value your time

Whatever you do, keep in mind whether it is the best use of your time or not and whether it is creating genuine value for you. Is replying to that email that’s just come in urgent but not massively important? Are there bigger priorities which will help you grow your business and achieve your goals quicker? And are you letting perfectionism slow you down by overthinking, over-editing or waiting until things are 100% before you will act? I know I sometimes do! My own coach once told me that ‘imperfect action wins the day’, and it has literally transformed the way I work.

2.  Focus on your strengths

Small business owners often have to wear many hats and it’s hard to be good at all of them. Whether it’s admin, legal stuff or accounting there are lots of flexible low-cost solutions out there for you to outsource some of this stressful work and leave you to focus on what you’re best at and what is going to generate more income for your business. There’s also a lot of help out there if you fancy upskilling in something, be that YouTube tutorials, local workshops or online training. I also recommend a read of a well known business book ‘The EMyth’ by Michael Gerber which explains how to navigate the world of entrepreneurship when your talents lie in the more technical/creative aspect of your business.

3.  Embrace ease!

Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the struggle or overcomplicate things (again, I know this first hand!). Reminding yourself to keep things simple where you can will save you a lot of stress, as will tapping into your intuition for guidance, especially when you’ve got decisions to make. I’ve also found that the simple (but often challenging) act of saying no to something can be a powerful way of freeing up time, energy and space for the things you truly want or need. And another similarly challenging but powerful act is that of asking for help and practising a little self-care every now and then. Ultimately it will make you more productive and make your business more sustainable. So, next time you feel guilty for taking a proper lunch break, please remind yourself of this!
