How to transform your life by transforming your self-image
We were created to enjoy and have all the good that life has to offer. Unfortunately, not everyone views their life and the world that way. Some see it as a very harsh, cruel world and they are forever struggling in some aspect or another, never enjoying what they have nor aware of all the beauty around them, offered by the world they live in.
Science and psychology say the one prime cause of success and failure in life (although I do not believe in failure, I only believe in feedback) is that of a hidden self-image that every person has. Our self-image controls our life as certain as our brain controls our heartbeat.
Self-image and self-esteem are closely linked, and one influences the other. Self-esteem is about how we feel about ourselves; whether we feel worthy or not. Our self-image is how we see ourselves and what we believe we are capable or not capable of.
Our self-image lies in our mind, in our subconscious mind to be more precise. While the conscious mind is the mind that thinks and gathers information, the subconscious is the part that determines our behavior. It is where our old self-image is lodged and controls every act and move we make, literally controlling all our results.
Let’s say your self-image is that you are incapable of having a healthy, long lasting relationship, or that you have to work really, really hard to earn a living, or that you can’t hold a job down for longer than a few months, then these will be the exact results you’ll be getting.
So if you are wondering about what kind of self-image you have, all that you need to do is to look at the various areas of your life. Take a look at the results you’re getting, your relationships, your income, the position you hold at work, the type of business you are operating with, take a look at your own personal appearance. These are all the results and the outer expression of your inner image.
Your self-image could also be that you are “the nutty, crazy one”, “the shy one” or “the unorganised one”. On the other hand if your self-image is “I’m the straight and organised”, that’s what you will be. Whatever your self-image is your reality will be a reflection of it.
Our subconscious mind is almost always, if not always set on autopilot. This means that, when we are going into a direction that isn’t congruent with our subconscious or self-image, it will pick up that deviation and feed the information into the coordination mechanism, the person's nervous system. This results in a change of our behaviour i.e. (self-) sabotage kicks in, so that we are back in alignment with our old, negative self-image.
Learning about this has helped me so much, I had many "a-ha moments" because of it and I know it will do the same for you. Together with your commitment to self-love and spiritual-development, creating a successful, loving and powerful self-image will rock your world.
If we want to change our patterns, we have to change our self-image first.
To change your self-image, first of all think about what kind of self-image you would like to have. Ask yourself a few questions, such as who do you want to be, how do you want to live or act, what would you like to be capable of? Who would you be, if you were fully aligned with your highest self? Feel free to consider every area of your life.
Once you have pondered over these questions, follow the three simple steps below and repeat as often as you can:
1) Write a thorough description of the person you’d like to be
Make a commitment to honour this person and reread the description as often as you can. Think it, see it and feel it.
2) Act it
Go out there and act like the person you wrote the description of. Tell yourself, you are that person over and over again.
Each day take the time to sit in silence, let everything go and visualise your new powerful self-image. See it and feel it clearly. Feel it with every single cell of your body.
Repetition is key. The more you practice the first three steps, the sooner your new self-image will be replacing your old one and your behavior will align itself with it.
As always, I truly hope this article serves you and remember to have fun on your self- and spiritual development journey. “Angels fly because they take themselves lightly” :)
