It has taken me years to figure out what I wanted from my career, what’s worse is as I look back at my career, I realise how much of the decisions I made were really to fulfil someone else’s idea of who I should be rather than who I am. Not only was my career pathway aligned to everyone else’s idea of who I was, or should be, how I turned up to my roles was also determined by the idea of who I should be which was exhausting, demotivating and guess what, I was deeply unhappy!

To be clear, you don’t need to sink quite as low as I did to know that your career doesn’t quite fit in with who you are anymore, these signs are often glaring and sometimes subtle but almost always indicate that it’s time for you to make a Switch.

Here are 6 tell-tale signs prompting you to see that you are ready to Switch and start you own Business:

1. You’re apathetic and complacent. 

You feel increasingly disconnected from your beliefs, values and even the work that you do, at some point you may even begin to wonder what you purpose in life really is! 

2. You don’t feel like you’re making an impact.

Your job and your duties begin to feel like they are the same day in and day out, with everyday eventually looking and feeling identical. Simply put, you are performing on autopilot and this feels so unfulfilling.

3. You dread going to work.

While we all have those days when you hit the snooze button one too many times, or it takes a little extra boost to get up and out to work, this is different, this is happening every day and despite your best efforts, the dread of going to work creeps in and starts to impact your home life.

4. Even your salary can’t make up for your dissatisfaction.

The pay might be good you may even have a ‘kick-ass’ pension, but the work is mindless, dreadful and the ends just don’t justify the means. There may have been a time you could have justified staying because of the perks, but now, even that isn’t enough.

5. Your job is affecting your personal life.

Work should be challenging right? but not debilitating. If you’re chronically exhausted, losing sleep, suffering from headaches or experiencing other physical symptoms, this may be your body’s way of telling you that your career is just not right for you anymore!

We’ve all spent our lunch breaks thinking about what you’d do in “your next life” and relishing the thought of how you would deliver your two-weeks’ notice, the ‘grass is always greener on the other-side’ as they say.
