Why do we escape our reality?
Another trip booked. Another parcel at the door. Another hour lost scrolling before bed. We call it self-care. We call it living our best life. But if we are honest, a lot of what passes for healing today is really just running.
Shopping, travelling, spending, disappearing into the digital world. None of these is wrong in themselves. The problem is when they become the only way we cope. When the moment things get quiet, uncomfortable, or too close to the truth, we reach for the next distraction instead of sitting with what is there.
The escaping is not the problem. The escaping is the solution to the problem. A quick, convincing and ultimately hollow solution, but a solution nonetheless.
Do you recognise yourself here?
You come home after a long day, and the first thing you do is reach for your phone, because silence feels louder than you expected. You book the next holiday before you have unpacked from the last one, because having something to look forward to is easier than being where you are. You tell yourself you deserve the treat, the trip, the purchase, and you do. Yet somewhere underneath, you know it is not really about deserving. It is about not feeling.
Sunday evenings feel heavy. Empty diaries feel dangerous. Being busy has become your personality, and you are not entirely sure who you would be without it. When a friend asks how you really are, you answer with your schedule.
If any of this lands, you are in very good company. Most of us were never taught how to be with difficult feelings. We were taught how to perform, achieve and keep moving.
What's behind it all?
Escapism works. That's the uncomfortable part. It gives us real relief, real joy, real excitement. Just not for long. Because it works so quickly, we keep going back to it, while the fear, the grief, or the anxiety underneath stays exactly where we left it.
I know quite a few people who have spent years travelling the world, yet feel strangely detached when it comes to building a stable relationship or a healthy family life. The passport is full. The foundations are empty. Instant gratification soothes the symptom. It never touches the cause.
What the behaviour is actually doing
In CBT terms, this is a classic avoidance cycle. Something triggers discomfort, perhaps an old wound, a fear of intimacy, or a belief such as "I'm not enough" or "If people really knew me, they'd leave." That discomfort feels unbearable, so we do something to make it go away. The relief that follows teaches the brain that avoidance is the answer, which means that next time, we avoid even faster.
Each escape quietly reinforces the belief that we cannot handle what is inside us. Over time, the world gets bigger, and the inner life gets smaller. We can navigate any airport, but not a difficult conversation. We can fill a basket in seconds, but not sit with our own thoughts for ten minutes.
What does it cost you over time?
The price is rarely obvious at first, because it is paid in instalments. Relationships that stay at the surface, because depth would mean being seen. Money spent on experiences that were really anaesthetic. Years that look full from the outside and feel strangely empty from within.
The highest cost is trust in yourself. Every time we escape, we miss a chance to discover that we could have coped. The feelings we run from do not disappear. They wait, they compound, and they tend to arrive all at once in the quiet seasons of life. There is a quieter cost still, and it lives in your closest relationships. The people who love you only ever meet the version of you that is halfway out the door. Real closeness needs stillness, and stillness is exactly what the escaping will not allow.
Real transformation begins when we gently turn towards the discomfort rather than away from it. Not all at once, and not alone. That is where the healthy foundations for life and relationships are actually built.
How can coaching help?
If you recognise yourself in any of this, you are not broken or weak. You have simply learned a way of coping that once protected you and now holds you back. Coaching offers a structured space to spot the patterns behind the automatic escape and build healthier ways of meeting the need underneath it.
