Long-term perspective: The journey to success

Let me ask: when was the last time you seriously thought about where you will be 10 years from now? Forget about a decade; I know people who have not considered what they will be doing within the next year.

Start with why and define your purpose

What is it you want? Why do you want those things? Are they things you will still want in the long term, or could they change?

We grow as people; we change and mature. Making a definite and decisive commitment to a long-term goal takes discipline, willpower and a strong sense of self. A true understanding of your emotions, intentions and, ultimately, your decisions will give you the clarity you need to formulate and work towards a long-term goal.

The sacrifices involved

Taking a long-term perspective can involve sacrifice. You are putting your faith in a future that is never guaranteed. You’re saying: “Some of the effort or discomfort I experience today may be worthwhile in the long term, whatever that may bring.”

One positive aspect of taking a long-term perspective is that it gives you time: time to prepare, plan, learn and adapt throughout the journey. While it may relieve some of the pressure surrounding the immediate future, it can also make each experience and decision more purposeful and meaningful.

However, you may be surprised by how much discipline it takes to make considered sacrifices, remain focused on a long-term goal and continue taking action each day. Those sacrifices should support your future without unnecessarily damaging your health, relationships or present well-being.

Making long-term goals easier

Luckily for everyone with long-term goals, there are ways to make it easier:

  • Visualise the life you wish to live often.
  • Share your plans with your partner, friends and closest associates.
  • Rejoice in the small victories.
  • Learn from your mistakes quickly.
  • Take action every day and maintain your momentum.
  • Ensure that you always have actionable, practical steps towards achieving your goal.
  • Be adaptable and allow your plans or goals to change as you grow.
  • Live a life of responsibility and meaning.

It can be difficult to continue working towards a long-term goal in the absence of meaning, purpose and responsibility.

A life of meaning can provide you with the motivation to strive for excellence in the face of adversity. It can give you a reason to make considered sacrifices in the present for the future. It can also provide the sense of responsibility needed to move forward with your dreams and make them a reality.

In short, most people want a good life. One difference between those who build on their dreams and those who don’t can be a long-term perspective: the ability to make considered choices now in support of a better tomorrow.

Start with why and give yourself an emotional reason to continue. Ensure that you are aware of the sacrifices and hard work needed to meet your own expectations, and make actionable plans – and stick to them. Adopt a sense of responsibility and consider how your goals could help you lead a meaningful life and contribute positively to the world around you.
