Is it your destiny or is it your unconscious patterns?
"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life, and you will call it fate." - Carl Jung
You may have read that quote before. Maybe you even nodded along. But have you ever actually stopped to ask what part of your own life it is pointing at?
I think about this almost daily in my work as a coach and therapist. I see it in the relationship patterns that keep repeating, no matter how different the people involved seem to be, in the career ceiling that shows up again and again just dressed differently each time, in decisions that feel entirely rational in the moment but that, looked at honestly over months and years, reveal something far less random than they appear.
What is the unconscious?
Here is what most people get wrong about the unconscious. It is not mysterious, not something locked away in dreams or buried deep in childhood memories you cannot access. It is simply the part of you running quietly in the background right now, shaped by everything you experienced before you had the words to understand it, steering your choices in ways that feel, from the inside, like simply being yourself. That is exactly what makes it so hard to spot.
When someone keeps choosing the same kind of relationship, hitting the same wall at work, or reacting in a way that surprises even them, it is rarely the problem on the surface. What matters is what is underneath it. The surface problem changes. What is underneath rarely does, until something genuinely shifts.
What does this look like in real life?
It might look like choosing partners who cannot quite show up emotionally, not because you want to be hurt, but because the unavailability feels strangely familiar in a way that real safety never has. Maybe you sabotage success right when it is finally within reach because some part of you learned long ago that being seen too clearly was not safe, or maybe it's giving endlessly to everyone around you while struggling to receive even the smallest gesture of care because needing something from someone else still feels, somewhere unspoken, like a risk you cannot take.
Nobody would call this fate out loud, but it often feels that way, like something that keeps happening to you rather than something you are quietly choosing, again and again. Does any part of that feel familiar?
What was Jung talking about?
Jung meant not that your life is set in stone, but that the parts of yourself you have never fully looked at will keep making decisions for you, and you will call the result bad luck, difficult people, or simply how things go for you.
The work of making the unconscious conscious is not comfortable or easy. It asks you to look at your own patterns without the comfort of the story you have always told yourself about why things turned out this way. It asks you to consider that some of what you blamed on circumstance also had something to do with what you brought into the room.
That is not something to feel ashamed of. It is something worth getting genuinely curious about and meeting that feeling with self-compassion and acceptance.
How coaching can help
The moment you actually see the pattern, not just understand it intellectually but feel where it came from and what it has been trying to protect you from, its grip on you starts to loosen. Slowly, and not without effort, but the choices that used to feel automatic start to feel like your own life choices again. What once looked like fate starts to look like a life you start to have control over.
This is often where the real shift happens. Not the surface-level changes, but the moment someone stops feeling like life is simply happening to them and starts understanding the part they have been playing in it, with curiosity instead of judgment, and with genuine excitement about what becomes possible from here.
This is more common than you think. We are all guilty of using unconscious decisions and behaviour daily. If you recognise yourself in any of this, reach out for support.
