How to find hidden career opportunities

Approximately 70% of jobs are not advertised.

Navigating the job market to find the best job for you can be confusing and many people early on in their job hunt feel they have exhausted all possible career options. They have discarded the more obvious, advertised job roles and reached a dead end in their job search arriving at the conclusion that they will never find a job that suits them. Unfortunately, these people are missing out on the hidden job market. They are also missing out on potentially finding a job that closely fits their unique skill set, values and personality.

If you don’t want to miss out, start broadening your job search strategy by networking. Networking will help you uncover hidden, unadvertised jobs. It involves meeting people with similar interests and finding out what they do. You will gain accurate information to assist your job search and broaden your awareness of your marketability for alternative employment by asking for other people’s opinions. You will start discovering jobs you had not even thought of.

If you are feeling a little daunted about the idea of networking or think that people will be too busy and won’t want to talk to you, think about how you would react to someone who gave you recognition and asked for your advice. We all like to be helpful, don’t we? We also all like to be flattered! You will be making them feel better about themselves as well as potentially finding the best job for you.

Start researching for those networking opportunities. Use people you know as well as people you don’t know. You will uncover the hidden job market and increase the opportunity of having a successful and happy career.
