What exactly is coaching? Let's go back to basics
It has been said that coaching is a ‘journey’. However, coaching is not so much the journey itself, but actually the vehicle for the journey.
The word 'coaching' comes from the word 'coach', as in coach the vehicle, which is a means of transport and a way of getting to your destination. So in essence coaching 'takes' the client from the place where they are now to the place where they would rather be. The coaching process is simply the best vehicle for the journey to where life is different.
It has been said that "you can go to Timbuktu, but you will still be there", but the wonder of coaching is that the place it takes you too, where life is different, is different because you change as you take part in coaching so when you reach your destination the improvement is because you will think, do and be 'better'.
So how does the coaching journey deliver its spectacular results, when it is essentially just a conversation? It's all down to the 'power' of the conversation and the questions the coach asks you and the observations the coach makes. The questions draw out the answers that lie hidden within you and the observations add clarity, fresh perspectives and insights. It's also about getting crystal clear on what you want (your goal) because if you don't know where you're heading it's very difficult to get there! The coach then provides the road map for success, helping you develop a strategy, a plan that works and actions that you want to and can achieve.
Talking of coaches, as in coach the vehicle, do you remember the Beatles album 'the magical mystery bus tour'? Well, there is something magical about the coaching journey too - sometimes the results of coaching are simply profound and yet the process can appear profoundly simple, so much so that it can seem as if magic really has taken place. Indeed the friends of a client who worked with me to boost her confidence, resilience and self-esteem said to her "blimey what happened to you that day; can you say those magic words to me?"
If you'd like to experience the magic of coaching, then do get in touch and let's meet for an initial chat.
