Will you be having a jolly Christmas?
Christmas comes each year with that ‘must have a good time’, being jolly and feeling great idealism attached to it.
Is that how you’re feeling? If so, wonderful! It can indeed be a very magical time of year: celebrating the religious meaning of advent, being with those we love, giving and receiving, partying, relaxing eating, drinking or whatever ways make it special for you.
There are many visions of jolly times around us: happy families opening beautifully wrapped gifts around their sparkling Christmas trees, banners of gorgeous models in glamorously fabulous outfits, Ho Ho Ho Santa Clauses being generous and merry, advertising on a gigantic scale showcasing all the gifts we could be buying our loved ones, festive spreads and beautifully decorated houses and tables for
the big day itself.
Lovely. Jolly in fact. Truly wonderful and indeed magical. . . . if the Christmas spirit takes you.
It can also however be a sad time for many. Those who remember loved ones no longer with them, those struggling to meet the financial outlays often required and perhaps expected, those with family difficulties and those not with the ‘perfect’ family, having that ‘perfect’ physical appearance or in the ‘perfect’ state of mind to fully enjoy it, those who are looking for their lifetime partner or who are alone, those who fear social gatherings, who are longing for a baby or to be part of a family unit, those left with the responsibility of organising everything and those feeling stressed or low.
Christmas-time isn’t all about mulled wine, mince pies and parties. It is often a time of deep thought and reflection and a time of trepidation. It is important we appreciate that it’s OK not to feel as magical or jolly as we’d like.
Listen to your own self, understand what holds you back from enjoying the Christmas spirit and take a deep breath. It’s all OK. It’s permissible not to force yourself into situations you feel uncomfortable. We all have the right to go with our gut instincts and our experience.
But then ask yourself what’s stopping you. And next work out what you need to do, what you want to do. Because we all deserve to feel jolly and enjoy Christmas-time as we approach another year. We deserve to be able to celebrate our achievements, our relationships, our successes, our being.
