The balance of fulfilment

What if we could live a life of fulfilment, feeling we are achieving what we desire and what is important to us, having a work-life balance with confidence and well-being. It is certainly possible with dedication, focus and action. And it’s what we deserve.

Certainly, it’s often easier to know when we aren’t quite living that life and perhaps a starting to point to getting there is to list the ways in which we aren’t content, or reviewing the aspects of our daily lives which feel difficult or a struggle, annoy, frustrate or disappoint us. So, what needs to change?

If you were to have a vision of living a life which feels happy and inspiring, how might that look? It is important to have an outcome, a goal, an idea of what you’re aiming for.

I encourage you to have fun exploring the possibilities and options. Be creative in your approach if that fits with your style; collage, design, build, draw, paint, mosaic or use coloured pencils and beautiful paper.

Write a list if that’s preferable, make notes even.

Sit in stillness and live in the moment of that fulfilment.

Listen to what you’re saying to yourself and hear the kind words.

Sense the feeling and emotions of contentment, success, joy and peace.

And breathe. If it feels achievable and exciting, it is time to move forward. If it doesn’t quite feel those, explore how to make it so.

And now, what is next?

Look at the areas which are important to you and think about the actions required for moving towards them.

For fitness and well-being, it’s important to create daily and weekly appointments for yourself to feel good. Maybe that’s a dance or yoga class, maybe it’s participating in an appealing physical activity; running, cycling, a boot camp, a netball or football match as a team sport or training event or with someone whose company you enjoy. Perhaps some pampering is needed, a massage or just time to be.

Emotional wellbeing is vital. Creating time and space to have a break, relax, read, watch a favourite movie and just enjoy the moment.

Eating well needs to be a focus; planning and preparing, shopping and being organised to make nutritious meals for good health.

If you are working hard or too hard, exercise and time for you is paramount. Review how to cut your working hours to a within a reasonable structure to turn off your mind in the evenings and at the weekend. Switching off your Blackberry, setting out of office messages, closing down laptops and work related technology can make a huge difference. Have different devices for personal use. Maybe it is about needing to learn to work smarter or reduce procrastination in the workplace.

And with newly found time here, explore something to enjoy or engage in, learn a new activity perhaps or reconnect with an old hobby or interest. Get curious too.

And for those of you with families, a partner or children, finding a balance is the way to be. Ditch the guilt. Do the best you can. Children require and benefit from time most of all. If you need to spend more, do it. The likelihood is that you will feel more fulfilled as a parent. A receptive and listening ear which focuses on what is being said makes a huge difference. The same goes for the people we love. Stress, feeling overwhelmed and being distracted are not helpful.

So, understand your priorities and goals to live a fulfilled life, have a vision too. Know where you are now and what needs to change. And then take action, step by step, small ones if necessary. Bit by bit moves change forward. And balance. And fulfilment. I wish you focused success.
