Feeling low

Sometimes life hits us hard and often unexpectedly. We take the blows and deal as best we can, until one more is just too much to bear. We fall, we crumble, we just can't get up again. Our resilience has been knocked for six.

When this happens, it's OK to feel overwhelmed or low, down or upset, hurt or sad. We need to understand the emotion and own it. Allow it too and be with it. Cry, stomp, shout, stay under the duvet, isolate ourselves. We need to do what we need to do at that time.

It's OK in fact to be anything we feel. As long however as we don't stay or live in that place long term when the emotion is negative or unhelpful.

So, what to do? To move forward? Be aware of how you feel and accept it. Just take a day at a time to make a step forward doing what you know will allow you to feel brighter. One thing, it may well be an effort, that's almost a given, or feel almost impossible. It could well take great strength and energy. That's OK, do it anyway. Just try and you will have something to be proud of or feel successful or good about. Choose something just for you.

Simple pleasures can help: nature, a nice meal, time outdoors, at the sea or in the sunshine, a walk, a drive, a cycle even, or reading, watching a movie, time with a special person in your life. Something really lovely for you.

Then take another new day. What else could brighten your soul?

Day by day is the only way. Some days the effort will be too much so try to set the intention at least. Connect with how you feel but don't let it consume you.

It's OK to feel low. We just mustn't stay there.
