Emotional freedom technique (EFT) and life coaching

When working with clients in the life coaching context I usually find that they are facing personal challenges in one of two key areas:

  • Performance - In terms of knowing what they want, how to set goals or how to take action to achieve those goals. It may also be behaviours that they want to adopt in order to change. If this is the case I usually use the more traditional coaching tools.
  • Emotional - If however clients do not know what is stopping them taking action, or if they fell 'lost' or off centre, then EFT can be used to help them clear negative emotions, associations, limiting beliefs and to make sense of the messages that their subconscious is telling them.

EFT is an energy psychology approach, that uses the fingers to tap on the ends of meridians to affect the flow of energy that is associated with emotions, thoughts and feelings about the clients issues.

EFT can be used on a wide range of emotional issues such as:

  • trauma
  • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • phobias and fears
  • anger
  • stress
  • eating issues
  • sadness and grief
  • depression
  • it can also help with the management of bipolar, as well as facilitating clients to access better mental states during disease and syndromes.

It is not uncommon to help clients resolve or shift these aspects of their personality and thinking and to help them adopt new and more appropriate, but also ecological, and helpful ways of thinking. This ultimately helps them free up their mind and thinking so that they can take action and start the process of change.

Once clients are back to a state where they feel they can take personal responsibility and emotional balance, more traditional coaching tools can be used such as goal setting, wheel of Life, SMARTER principles etc to get them to take action.

If they come across any more emotional barriers, EFT can resolve these and foster personal empowerment.

My philosophy is very much about getting clients into an 'independent' state, taking responsibility for their actions and results, rather than them being dependent on me.

If you are serious about personal change and development, contact a coach to help you learn the tools for lasting change.
