Burnout

Many of us recognise when we are under a lot of pressure and feel stressed however heading towards a burnout is often less obvious to us. It can creep up on us without us realising what is happening. When you are burnt out you experience a state of emotional, mental and physical exhaustion and you might feel empty, lack motivation to do anything and feel that you just simply do not care about anything anymore. The cause of burnout is stress. In particular, stress that is experienced for a prolonged period of time.

The first step towards avoiding a burnout is to recognise the signs. The signs could be that you lack enthusiasm for your day ahead and every day seems to be a bad day. You might feel tired, drained and exhausted most of the time and find it hard to motivate yourself. You might even feel helpless and trapped or detached and alone.

Once recognising that you might be heading towards a burnout you might want to seek support and start addressing the cause of the problem. Slow down if you can and re-evaluate your goals and priorities in life.

Next, start building your resilience to stress by taking care of your mental, physical and emotional health. Adopting a more positive, solution focused and empowered mindset, exercising more, learning to manage stress better and seeking social support can help you to become more resilient and to avoid a burnout.
