A-Z Guide to finding work you love - Letter G

G = Goals

Now I know what you're thinking... "How can I set a goal for something when I don't know what I want to do with my career in the first place?"

Okay, so here's the thing. If you don't know what job you want, don't worry about identifying an ideal job title at this stage. The important thing now is to identify what you want from a job. Here are a few considerations:

1. What skills do you want to be using in your ideal job?

2. What experiences do you want to walk away from work with at the end of a good day?

3. What working hours do you prefer?

4. What is the maximum distance that you are prepared to travel to work?

5. What kind of lifestyle does your work allow you to have?

A picture will start to emerge once you've answered these questions clearly. Considering these matters will also help you to stay focused and avoid procrastination.

It's also important to write your goals down and keep it somewhere prominent like a fridge door, bedside table or you could even set up a regular reminder on your phone. This means that it will be a constant reminder to you of what you are wanting to achieve.

For example, if you go to Planet Hollywood in New York, you will find a letter that martial arts movie star Bruce Lee wrote to himself in 1970. It says something like "By 1970 I am going to be the biggest Oriental movie star in American history and I will have made $10m".

Bruce Lee died in 1973 but by then he had already achieved his goal.
