Focus on your Life!

Have you heard of “target fixation”? I heard about it recently, where drivers hit objects they’re trying to avoid. They concentrate so much on the tree, road sign or car they want to avoid, that they actually hit it. There are thousands of people who do this – and it’s the same for many of us in our daily lives. We are fixated on the fact we may not be able to achieve what we truly desire, fixated on barriers that could get in our way, fixated on the fact we don’t deserve a more fulfilling, inspirational or exciting life.
If you are feeling a little uncomfortable with that thought I understand how you feel. I’ve been there too. Are you held back by your responsibilities? Are you held back by these words – “you’ll never be able to achieve anything like that”? Are you held back by other people? We all know that we have responsibilities; we all know that there are certain things we have to pay for in order to have a decent standard of living. How would it feel if you could do what you really wanted? What part of your life would you change? Would it be your work? Would it be your environment? Would it be your fitness or health?
It takes guts to make changes. If you are plodding through life feeling as if you are wading through treacle and glad to get through the day, why not change something? If you get into bed and think “let’s sleep before battle commences again tomorrow” then you are not in a good place in your life. If you want to change something, no matter how small, then do it. Think about one thing that you want to change and write it down. Make this your target. Make it real – write it in big bold letters. Close your eyes for a few minutes and visualise yourself achieving this goal. What can you see, hear and feel? Pin your goal up in your kitchen and read it every day for a week. Become very aware of it, become fascinated by it.
After a week sit down with that piece of paper in front of you and think about what it would mean to you if you could achieve your goal. Write down three actions that will get you closer to achieving it. Use colour, felt-tip pens, pictures, anything that will connect you with your goal and bring those action steps alive. Feel joyful! Feel excited! Feel motivated! Feel inspired! Feel creative! Feel energised! Feel the smile spreading on your face! These are extraordinarily wonderful feelings – really feel them.
Target fixation can be a good thing if it brings about inspirational and rewarding change in your life. Three steps, that’s all it takes. Why wouldn’t you want to do that? You can achieve great things – I believe in you - live a truly incredible life, you deserve it.
