About me

I have a lot to bring to the Coaching Relationship. I spent 20 years working at Senior Executive level delivering not for profit healthcare services. During that time I was a national advisor providing consultancy support to healthcare providers, commissioners and regulators while continuing to work as a Counsellor.

To complement an MBA and an MA in Counselling, I added an Advanced Diploma in Professional Coaching accredited by the Association for Coaching. This has helped me develop a comprehensive and holistic approach to supporting individuals as I am able to connect with them on many different levels.

I am a registered member of both the Association for Coaching and the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and comply fully with their Codes of Ethics.

I have worked with a wide range of clinicians, executives and senior managers as well as solo entrepreneurs and people at various crossroads or turning points in their lives.

Desire, Support & Opportunity...
Successful people frequently have three things in common: The Desire to become more than they are; someone to Support them in reaching their goals; and the Opportunity to try out new ideas.

Through my Coaching Programmes, I will help you focus your desires, support you in translating them into real world actions and provide the opportunity to safely explore new ways of working to take you where you wish to go.

A Definition of Executive Coaching...
Coaching is a conversation between people with the explicit intention of improving their lives. I facilitate this change by increasing your understanding of how you interact with those around you; helping you to clarify both your needs and your wants; identifying the obstacles that prevent you from achieving; and defining the skills needed and actions required to overcome them so as to bring about permanent positive change.

I can support you in achieving this by encouraging you to recognise and develop your own resources and use them in a more focussed and effective way.

Helping You to Become Your Best ...
We all have within us the ability to become more than we currently are. Obstacles fall in our way, we take wrong turnings or do not have the right tools to hand when they are needed.

Nobody can tell you what is right for you, although many people will try. Coaching will help you discover the route that works best for you, help you plot the course that will take you where you want to go, and make sure you have everything on-board that you need to complete the next stage in your adventure.

Learning Through Relationships...
I believe that we learn best through relationships and so all of the programmes are based around face to face meetings. These meetings can be at your workplace or at my dedicated space in Burnham on Crouch, Essex.  I am able to see clients across London and throughout the East of England.

Next Steps…
To maximise the potential benefit from any of these programmes, it is important that people are fully engaged with the process from the start. For this reason, there is the opportunity for a preliminary conversation before committing to any particular schedule.

For those considering a single session, this would be by telephone. For those contemplating a greater investment in their future, this would also include the additional option of a face to face meeting.  These preliminary conversations provide an opportunity to consider the type of issues that will be raised, the potential outcomes being sought and the most suitable programme to deliver them. Whatever the format these initial contacts are free of charge and, like all interactions, will be totally confidential.

If you would like to know more about what I am able to deliver or wish to arrange an initial conversation, please contact me by telephone or email.

Training, qualifications & experience

In addition to the real world experience I gained as a Chief Executive, Board Member and National Adviser, I have pursued parallel study paths in Management, Coaching and Counselling.

I began with skills based Diplomas which led through research and academic study to Master's Degrees in both Business (MBA) and Therapeutic Counselling (MA). To enhance my understanding and to further develop my coaching skills, I have completed an Advanced Diploma in Professional Coaching with Wild Goose School of Coaching.  This training programme is accredited by the Association for Coaching at their highest level and forms part of their Coach Accreditation Programme.

I have recently completed an Integrative Diploma in Individual and Group Supervision and so am able to offer this form of support to coaches at all stages of their developmental journey.

Continuing Professional Development keeps me up to date with global developments in professional and executive coaching.  I remain fully compliant with the Code of Ethics of both the Association for Coaching (AC) and the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) and continue to be subject to their Complaints and Disciplinary processes.

Client Feedback:
Feedback is a vital component in ensuring I continue to design and deliver programmes that fully meet people's needs, wants and expectations. Informal feedback is sought throughout the Coaching Process so that we can stay on track, and everyone is encouraged to complete a comprehensive online survey once the work is complete. While much of this detailed feedback must remain confidential, I have been given permission to publish the following comments:

"Michael is a lovely man to work with. I can’t speak highly enough of his genuine, kind, caring and helpful nature and his suitability for this work."

"I can highly recommend working with Michael Golding. Clarity is superb!"

"Michael was a very thoughtful and helpful Coach. Over our sessions, we really got under the surface of some of my beliefs and behaviours - and how they impacted my professional and personal life. I would certainly recommend his services."

"I really feel that Michael has been present in each session, hearing the nuances of my dilemmas. He has been able to reflect back with intuition the not so obvious parts of my motivations in a useful and enlightening way. Michael's support and encouragement has allowed me to move on considerably in my goals and in ways that are a lot more subtle and enduring than simply getting things done. Fully recommended."

"Thank you very much for such a transformational process. I feel as though I am in a different place now compared to when we started. I have let go of old limitations which did not serve me and can now look forward positively."

"My experience has been hugely beneficial both personally and professionally. Having dedicated time to think in a safe, caring and supportive environment has allowed me to explore my goals. Having a skilled coach with me discussing my options allowed me to consider other approaches which I would not have previously considered. As a result of my coaching experience, I have developed the confidence to do things differently and look at situations through a different lens."

“I would like to thank Michael for his insightful, calm and considered approach to coaching which has been pivotal in supporting my growth and development over the past year… what has surprised me was that the things I had planned to discuss in each session were rarely the things which I ended up focussing in on, and has provided some richly rewarding areas for further exploration, and learning. A very challenging process with skilled use of observations about what was said (or often what was not said) but gave me space to think and reflect.”

My clients have included senior executives and clinicians working within the public sector, innovative small business owners and specialist health and wellbeing practitioners.

Other areas of coaching I deal with

Relationship Coaching
Relationship Coaching involves working with two or more people whose lives are connected to improve the quality of their relationship. The main objective is to increase the effectiveness of the relationship so that all of those involved are able to achieve their individual and collective goals. This form of coaching can be effective for people in a wide variety of relationships such as business partners or colleagues, as well as those in romantic or family relationships. It can be applied in a number of settings, wherever two or more people are committed to a shared goal.

Crisis Coaching
Bringing in an outsider might not be your first thought when faced with a personal or organisational crisis, but it is worth taking time to reflect upon the possible benefits. Having a Coach on your team will help in understanding the wider implications of any incident. They will bring the perspective of the outsider while also appreciating the pressures being experienced by the individuals within the organisation. An independent Coach can help maintain perspective by challenging the defensiveness that is a natural response to any external threat. Through helping to quantify the scale and scope of the issues involved, the Coach can support the process of developing a response that is comprehensive and proportionate. Operating outside of the crisis, the Coach has the emotional detachment to assess progress in resolving the crisis in a way that truly meets the needs of all concerned.

Coaching Supervision
I have recently completed a diploma in integrative supervision and now feel able to offer supervision to individuals and groups across a range of professions. I regard supervision as a discipline in its own right which requires a different set of skills and competencies to coaching.

I believe in a model for supervision that is both collaborative and consultative. I recognise the autonomy of the trained professional and see my role as providing an opportunity for the supervisee to expand their understanding of their practice and the impact they have upon the people they work with.

I am committed to the person centred approach, however I feel able to support supervisees working within a range of professional disciplines as our main focus is the supervisee’s relationship with their client which exists outside of any particular modality.

I am willing to work with trainee coaches depending upon their stage of development and the requirements of their training organisation.

I believe that the role of the supervisor is to encourage and support supervisees in their understanding of what is happening within the coaching space; appreciating and helping them develop their ability to manage these feelings; and together identifying what they might need to develop further and how they might access this. This can be summarised as promoting and supporting Understanding, Competency and Growth and I see this as a shared journey for both of us.

The primary task is to establish a relationship of trust so supervisees feel they can talk freely and safely about any aspect of their work without fear of judgement. Through a preliminary conversation we can check out whether there is the basis for establishing this form of equal relationship based upon mutual respect. This is something that would be revisited regularly throughout the supervisory contract.

Further information

My Signature Coaching Programme:
While every experience is different, it might be useful to describe a typical coaching programme. Initially, we would explore your present situation and, like ripples in a pond, consider how it impacts on other aspects of your life and the lives of those around you. We review the narrative that has become your story and consider how it reflects your lived experience. This provides a context within which the work takes place and helps to build trust.

Having established the setting, we look at what you would like to achieve. These could be specific and detailed goals leading to measurable outcomes or more abstract desires or feelings. Either way, it is important we understand them and appreciate their personal significance for you. It can be unhelpful for goals to become fixed targets too early on, so outcomes remain flexible and are able to evolve as work progresses. This recognises that as we grow our wants, needs and desires may change.

Having put flags in the sand, we may take time to consider what has brought you here. Working through your chronology, we look at your early dreams and aspirations and the people and events that have influenced your decisions and choices. Walking down these paths we will collect snapshots of those moments which resonate strongly.

We would agree upon definitive steps you might take towards achieving your goals or fulfilling your wants and desires, and we take a hard look at what might get in the way of your success. This may involve revisiting any blinds alleys you walked down in the past and looking at why this worked out the way it did.

Quality coaching is about maintaining the balance between challenge and support. While challenge adds much of the dynamic energy to the conversation, without support it can feel like walking a high wire without a net. We will look at where your personal challenges lie and if we cannot find a way through them we will plot our course around.

Depending upon the time available we may invest more resources in particular phases of this process. For example, we may take time to lay out those snapshots we collected earlier and reflect upon their value, both then and now, in more detail. We may also focus on the absences; things, people or times that have not been mentioned and which now appear as holes within the narrative.

Finally, we will look at how this new narrative positions you to meet the future - both the one you are currently facing and the possible futures you might be hoping for.

This process is tailored to fit your situation and can take place within a single conversation or over several meetings and with elements being repeated throughout the coaching cycle.
