Hello, I'm Sam.
I'm keen on seeing a world where everyone is earning money from enjoyable, meaningful work.
This is why I became a career coach.
We're often taught that when we find our 'one thing', we are set for life!
But, that doesn't take into account the fluidity of human identity and experience. We change; as do our interests, desires, and passions. This is a normal part of being human. The idea that one, single, life-affirming endeavour will keep us engaged for our entire lives is actually the exception rather than the rule. So, if you've found yourself at a crossroads, you are not alone.
There are 3 main groups of people that I work with:
- Students and young people who aspire to successful careers using the qualifications they are currently studying.
- Adults who have realised that their current job is not right for them and want to move on to something more inspiring.
- Those with ADHD (diagnosed, seeking diagnosis or just suspected) who are struggling with progressing in their careers, or finding the right sort of work due to their symptoms.
I have been in each of the above situations, therefore I am uniquely qualified to help you.
My work with students often looks like two things:
- Coaching you through the steps to get to your dream career.
- Confidence coaching for coursework and presentation skills.
If you've got a great idea of where you want your career to go after college/university, I can help you start putting that plan into motion today so you can hit the ground running after you qualify or graduate.
If you're looking to simply build confidence around your coursework, your classes or your presentation skills then, let me tell you, this is perfectly achievable.
Confidence, like everything, is a learned skill; it's simply practice. Those first bits of practice can be scary, but I'll be there to guide you and help you find the steps that you're most comfortable taking.
Adults who are 'career-stuck'
So, you've realised you're in the wrong career! What's your next move? In the complex game of chess that is the modern world, it can all feel like such a tangle!
Here are a few examples of common 'sticking points' that I will help you work through:
- You don't yet know what you'll enjoy or be good at.
- You can't afford to start at the bottom of a new career.
- Your current job is so draining that you don't have the energy to think about how to take any meaningful next steps.
- Growing up, you dreamed about (and trained for) your current career. Now you're done with it, what next?
- You have a comprehensive bank of skills and professional experience; how can you repurpose everything?
I'll help you.
I will work with you to draw out your strengths and interests; building up a set of fulfilling and inspiring professional options.
We will use your existing experience and draw on that to give a unique vantage point into your new career. This will mean that you won't necessarily be starting right at the bottom.
You will set your own goal: Together we will work (within your energy levels) to take meaningful steps toward your goal. You will start to see real progress in only a short amount of time.
I have ADHD myself, and, although each person with ADHD is different, I do understand a lot of the professional struggles that you're going through.
No, you're not destined to be struggling in low-paid, entry-level jobs for life. You can find a career that works with the way your mind works.
As a person with diagnosed or suspected ADHD, you will have likely found that there are quirks to your behaviour that the rest of the world have a bit a of a problem with.
This is their problem, not yours, and you can be successful EXACTLY as you are.
If you're struggling with work, and want to build something that provides you with motivation, novelty, and meaning (that also earns you money), I can help you.
We will look at:
- Who you are and some of your barriers to traditional working.
- ADHD-friendly resources.
- What can be achieved with the right support.
- Whether self-employment or traditional employment may be right for you and what sort of work you thrive in.
We will find the place you're meant to be.
My Professional Background & Approach:
I have a zoology degree and my first career was in medical research and neuroscience.
I loved training new people and seeing where they would take their new-found skills, so I pivoted; training as a further education teacher (16+ and adult education). Through my work as a teacher, I discovered that I actually loved helping students with their career aspirations. I moved onward into career coaching within universities: I now work with a cohort of university level students, helping them with all the points covered above!
My background in zoology, neuroscience, and teaching means that I take a novel approach to coaching. Human society has developed a lot over the last few hundred thousand years, but, humans themselves, kind of haven't! Anthropologically speaking, your most fundamental needs as a human: creativity, curiosity and the need to be part of something meaningful are the core threads that we will use to re-weave the rich tapestry of your life.
Training, qualifications & experience
I trained in coaching with The Coaching Academy. I have a level 5 qualification in Personal Performance coaching. I also completed a short course in the neuroscience of coaching with The Coaching Academy.
I have a PGCE (full teaching qualification) where I specialised in post-16 education.
I qualified as a coach in 2023, while studying I worked in both higher and further education. I completed my teacher training, however, felt that the careers and advice service was more my jam.
