What is a coach?
A coach is someone who helps another to uncover, realise and develop their own unique strengths and skills; to guide them in putting these to the best possible use, thereby achieving balance, fulfilment and enjoyment in their lives.
What sort of coach am I?
Despite my 13 years as a doctor, it wasn’t until my own injury in 2014 that I really began to understand what it meant to feel broken. I remember being brought to my knees with pain and suddenly realising that I had been made to stop for a reason!
Over the last 3 years I have been on an incredible journey of self discovery and self understanding that has allowed me to put the pieces back together with better and stronger glue. It has not been a straight forward or easy path and I still have days where I don’t feel I’ve got the balance quite right, but I now enjoy life and know that if something doesn’t feel right for me, I have the power to change it.
In my own personal, medical and military experience, I have met and cared for many people who have been broken in many different ways. I have tried to encourage them in finding their way ahead and have often felt that I wanted to do more to support and guide them. In my capacity as an Injury Recovery and Wellness Coach, I now feel much better placed to do just that.
Pillars of coaching and wellness
Recovering from injury or illness feels like an uphill battle for most. Just as in a battle you are best prepared to fight when you are well rested, well fed and are free from worry; these are the foundations that underpin our recovery journeys.
After an initial session to get to understand you, your story and aspirations, I will use the pillars below to help you build your best foundation for recovery and ultimately a more fulfilling life. I very much look forward to working with you!
SLEEP… EAT… MOVE… RELATE… LIVE… WELL!
Training, qualifications & experience
I am proud to be the third generation of doctors in my family. I studied at the University of Wales College of Medicine and graduated with distinction in 2004.
My career has been varied and interesting. I have a background in both Emergency Medicine and General Practice and spent 16 years in the military working in many different locations and environments around the world. I continue to maintain my acute medical knowledge and teach for the UK Resuscitation Council. I am a member of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and the Institute of Functional Medicine.
I have always been drawn to helping others to get the most out of their lives but, as a doctor, have often felt frustrated and constrained in the traditional medical framework and timescale for consultations.
Since my injury in 2014, I have found myself in the role of both patient and doctor. It is through what I have learned on my own journey of healing and recovery that I have come to appreciate the need for the insights, support, guidance and energy of others. This has enabled me to gain the perspective I was lacking to be able to reassess and rebalance my life for the better.
I have learned to take good care of myself first and foremost as without this, I would have been unable to continue to care for others. My self-care involves eating well, prioritising sleep, sunshine and spending time with friends and family who lift my spirits. I have found that enthusiasm and positivity is infectious and the best tonic for recovery!
I am passionate about sharing my knowledge and experience with others to help them on their journeys. As part of this I have undertaken formal coaching training at the Raw Horizons Coaching Academy and am a member of the Association for Coaching. I am proud to be offering Injury Recovery and Wellness Coaching at my Integrative Care Consultancy near Bradford on Avon.
