Do you love the fulfilment, freedom and variety that comes from being a creative person, but wish you had a more effective way to navigate the knock-backs, perfectionism and burn out the flip side can bring?

Hi, I’m Josh, a Creative Wellbeing Coach. Drawing on my 20-year career as an actor and BAFTA-nominated filmmaker, I help ambitious people discover what I call their “grounding moves”; the steps they can take to achieve their goals by being more grounded. 

Knowing how to ground yourself as a creative can be the difference between having an idea and turning that idea into a finished film, novel or business. 

As performers, storytellers and entrepreneurs, we need imagination and drive to create ideas and vulnerability to put ourselves out there. We spend a large amount of time and energy in the ‘leap’ stage of a leap of faith, like the initial climb of a plane after take-off. The goal, of course, is to land; to land that acting role / that funding / an optioned script, or to just get it "right".  Yet until we achieve x, y or z, we often convince ourselves that we can't land. So we keep climbing, despite the turbulence, waiting for air traffic control (our agent / that investor) to get in touch.

But how long are we prepared to wait for permission to land?

Knowing how to ground ourselves is not only empowering, it makes it more likely we'll reach our destination without running out of fuel. We might even enjoy the journey more, too!

My Story

Having been there myself, I understand that when vocation can feel so connected to identity, it’s more complicated than “work/life balance”.

I spent my 20s thinking I might achieve more, quicker if I just drive harder and leap higher towards my ideal outcome - I could work on personal development when I’d got my film made or after I’d booked another commercial.  But I’d got it the wrong way around. My lack of groundedness made me feel in a perpetual state of zero gravity. I was lost in an ocean of possibilities, reactive to the first sign of stress and unable to build on my achievements. As a result, I experienced anxiety, burn out and low self-esteem. 

It was the experience of working with a coach myself that helped me understand I had more resources available to me than I thought, and I could harness them to create positive change. This was incredibly empowering. It also encouraged me to realise a passion for helping other people navigate similar issues, whether they were working in the arts or inherently creative in other areas of their lives. 

I believe that we are all creative and resourceful and that we often already have the tools we need to get to where we want to be; we just sometimes need a hand accessing them in a way that works for us. And if we put as much energy into cultivating inner resources as we do shooting towards an outcome, we're more likely – in my opinion– to be happier, healthier and more successful.

Sessions are 60 minutes and are held online via Zoom. Or for clients local to Molesey, I offer the option of in-person riverside walking sessions along Hurst Towpath.

I combine my training in Transformational Coaching, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Personal Training and grounding practices I’ve learned from martial arts and acting performance to provide an integrative, holistic coaching style. 

I offer a supportive, non-judgemental space for clients to reflect on any and all aspects of their lives, form their own connections and make discoveries important to their journey, whether that be navigating change, starting a new business, or allowing more time for what makes them happy.

Sessions are conversation-based and collaborative in nature, but are 'client-led' and so will form around what you bring each time we meet. I’ll ask questions and occasionally make observations in response, either to clarify or to inspire deeper reflection. In each session, we’ll usually start by agreeing on an area you’d like to focus on and end by thinking about how you might use these reflections to move you closer to your goal and/or deepen awareness and resilience. 

If appropriate to the work you bring, I'll occasionally suggest optional resources and exercises around mindset, perspective and cognition. These may take the form of worksheets or be more somatic and experiential in nature, such as mental rehearsal, breath work or similar. 

I’ll always check in with how you’re feeling about the process and we’ll review progress frequently.
