About me

Do you wish you had better communication skills?
Do you want to become more confident?
Do you want to be more motivated?

Hello, I'm Joel and I am a qualified business and personal development coach who specialises in communication skills and confidence.

If you are a leader who wants to communicate more effectively with your team or clients/customers, a job seeker who wants to improve how you come across to build career prospects or a successful professional looking to improve relationships and find more work/life balance, then I can help you.

Here are some of the ways I can help:

  • Techniques for managing work-based stress.
  • Helping to produce engaging content for your audience.
  • Improving how you communicate with colleagues and customers, in both spoken and written form.
  • Helping managers to effectively lead and empower their teams.
  • Building confidence in both interviewers and interviewees.
  • Helping busy professionals to communicate effectively with their family.
  • Become confident in communicating with others what it is you want.
  • I equip executives with techniques to build their business and personal brand by communicating authentically with clients and staff.
  • Effectively build relationships with colleagues and customers.
  • Building confidence for public speaking/delivering presentations.
  • Increase self-awareness.

We will meet regularly by one-to-one video conferencing and I will support you, challenge you, and provide you with a framework to make lasting change. This may mean helping you recognise where you want to be and how you can get there, as well as identifying the potential you already have. My methods include Transactional Analysis - a communication model that can make interactions with others more constructive - and Neuro-linguistic Programming, a technique that allows people to think and communicate more effectively.

Training, qualifications & experience

Having spent more than 15 years in leadership roles, managing teams of sub-editors and working in a fast-paced media environment as a journalist for national papers, I now combine my experience of dealing with stress, meeting deadlines, and being able to communicate effectively in challenging situations with coaching to help clients develop personally and professionally.

I've successfully completed the Barefoot Coach Training Course for Business and Personal Coaching and am a member of the International Coach Federation.

I have coached clients from a variety of backgrounds, including a director of a charity and managing director of a publishing start-up.

Here are some of their testimonials...

'Coaching with Joel has been one of the most positive and powerful experiences in my life so far. From my first point of contact, Joel made it very easy for me to talk to him and to trust him, with absolutely anything and everything. We worked through very simple exercises, which enabled me to have a clear vision of why I react the way I do. What may have seemed like a negative, suddenly became a positive! Joel, in a very short time, has equipped me with tools to handle challenging situations. He supported me through a couple of very important decisions that I had made and gave me the confidence to carry these decisions through.'

Beejal Gajjar, catering business co-owner

'Working with Joel has been incredible. It has really enabled me to take a wider look at my life and to challenge my own and other's perceptions of who I am and the power I have to re-define long time (and often wrong) images I hold of myself. Joel has a way of unlocking some deep issues whilst keeping them manageable and 'real-life'. I found that the space Joel gave me to reflect on my practices, goals, and relationships (personal and professional) has been invaluable in relation to personal growth.  Working with Joel to clarify my vision and aims as a charity leader has enabled me to see more clearly how to take true responsibility for my part in building strong teams, having more focus and clarity around what is important and being able to prioritise. All of these changes have helped me to feel more organised, more productive and importantly for me, calmer. I would recommend Joel to anyone who is interested in investing in themselves. His gentle, humorous and perceptive approach challenged my pre-conceived ideas of what a "Life Coach" is and I feel hugely grateful to have had the chance to access his service.'

Helen Laryea-Dyer, Director, Children on the Autistic Spectrum Parents Association

'Joel was a great coach who was brilliant at listening to me and asking the perfect question(s) that would make me stop, think and evaluate how I approached a situation. He was great at having me understand different perspectives, both about myself and those I work with. If you're looking to become an authentic leader I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Joel.'

Evan Schiff, General Manager, publishing start-up

'I have benefitted greatly from several months of coaching sessions with Joel. I first
approached him when I was at a crossroads in my life and needed some assistance with finding the best path for me going forward. On top of this goal, I was also keen to rediscover some personal confidence that had been eroded over the years.
Over the weeks, Joel guided me through my various personal challenges and goals,
encouraging me to find my own solutions while at the same time contributing invaluable insights and learning points. As a result of the work that we did together, I am in a far more stable position and feel that my confidence has grown greatly, too.
I would recommend coaching with Joel to anyone that is looking to make changes in their life, build personal confidence and effectiveness. Joel sets tasks and objectives to ensure that progress is continuously made and the actual experience of coaching with him is very enjoyable and fulfilling.'

Other areas of coaching I deal with

I also coach parents of children with special educational needs, particularly autism. As the father of a lovely six-year-old boy on the autistic spectrum, I have personal experience in this area. I support my clients as they navigate the many challenges and joys of caring for someone who sees the world in such a unique and special way. This can include exploring communication styles, family dynamics and techniques for creating a calm and nurturing environment.

Further information

To give you feel for how I have helped a client previously, here is a case study to illustrate how my coaching could help you. (Names and details have been altered to respect confidentiality).

Client Case Study

Jane, a publishing manager in her 30s, was having problems communicating with her team. She was a very driven person with high standards, which she wanted them to match. However, she also wanted to be liked by her team and was wary of acting in a dictatorial way. As a result, she often stayed up late finishing their work for them. This led to her feeling burned out and lacking in confidence.

We began with gentle but challenging questions to help Jane gain self-awareness of her situation. She came to realise that she had developed a 'fun' persona to shield herself from feeling vulnerable after growing up with a domineering mother. This meant her communication and leadership style was not aligned with what she really wanted from her team - for them to take more responsibility.

We then worked on a plan for how she could become more assertive while respecting the different personality types in her team. We role-played one-to-one and team meetings looked at her written communication style and explored how she could model positive work/life balance. All the time we were focussing on her best qualities and how to make sure these were coming across.

After six coaching sessions, Jane reported that she was working more harmoniously with her team, who now had a clearer expectation of what she wanted, and was feeling more confident as a manager.
