About me

Why me?
I’ve worn many different hats over the years and am now a coach because it allows me the freedom to put everything I’ve learnt at your disposal. I use many of these tools myself to maintain my own wellbeing and I love working with people  enabling them to find out what’s works for them.

I have worked with thousands of people over the last thirty eight years as a counsellor, therapist, trainer and facilitator within different organisations in different capacities. I have worked with people dealing with all sorts of problems including anxiety disorders, depression, bereavement, addiction, PTSD (these two are often linked), conflict in relationships, families and work situations, joblessness and adjusting to physical health conditions. The truth is I did not help all of those people as I would have wished to, but I learnt from them, and you will benefit from what they have taught me.

Credo – What I believe
We did not choose the shape we find ourselves, but once we are aware of how we came to be this shape, we can change if we choose to.
You have the resources you need to make the changes you want to make (although you may not know it).
We are affected not by events but by the view we take of them. (adapted from Seneca) And we can always change our point of view.
Hold out the pain and we hold out joy too. (Joanna Macy)
The past does not determine the future.
Behind the clouds, the sun still shines.

How I work
I work mostly on Zoom but also on the phone. I offer a free initial consultation which is usually half an hour long. In this session, you have an opportunity to experience how I work and decide if this is a good fit for you. The purpose is to set a clear goal for our work together and agree an initial contract. This is usually for six hour-long sessions and in each session, we will evaluate progress. Between sessions, you will be asked to engage in exercises and practices to support you to achieve the goal(s) you have identified.

Why ‘Ways to Be Well’?

The name of my website comes from a conversation I had with the occupational health doctor I saw prior to starting my last full-time job. I listed all the health conditions I was suffering from at the time, and he said ‘Well, we need to work out how to get you well’.

I was incredulous! I said (rather grumpily) ‘That’s not exactly a realistic goal.’
And he responded ‘I mean it’s about working out how you can be as well as possible for you to be given your health problems.’

Working full-time proved to be unrealistic given my physical limitations. However the goal this doctor gave me to work towards, has proved immensely beneficial. I find it deeply satisfying to have found ways to work around the limits set by various physical health issues and, having used the tools I offer to such good effect, I am confident they can prove helpful to others.
