Alter your approach. Change the direction. Break the cycle. Transform yourself, and transform the world.
There is a well known historical saying - 'Either find a way or make one'. My aim, through our coaching sessions, will be to deliver results using this broad approach.
I am a coach who helps people who are at the beginning of an exciting new stage in their lives, whether it be personal or professional. I believe that in coaching there are two keys that can help you unlock the door - Awareness and Responsibility. Contacting me shows an awareness that you want to change or develop and through working together we can take that awareness and give it direction and ultimately shape a responsibility for making a new world for you to live in.
“The mind, once stretched by a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
Having reoriented my own life and career from one of working in large organisations with a distinct set of rules, to creating and running my own coaching business (in 2011) reflecting my needs and choices, I am passionate about assisting others to change not only themselves but their environment in a way that reflects their own values.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am a husband, father, historian, writer, traveller, sportsman, and builder of things.
My career has been rich and varied and I have been fortunate to have worked on project development, coaching and training, and communications for government and parliament, universities, and for private sector consultancies and charities. The focus of the work has consistently been on improvement and relationship-building - creating and developing opportunities for organisations, and also for individuals, to explore and expand in positive and sustainable ways.
Over the last 2 decades, I have achieved two Masters degrees and a PhD through research at Glasgow University, and a Certificate in Coaching Practice from APP.
Today I offer a wide range of programs and services - from individual coaching, to project development to business support and beyond.

Areas of coaching I deal with
I have long considered it essential that coaching is accessible to all and is offered at a rate that people can afford.
Mercator is a small business - based in Central Scotland and run by myself, Dr Craig French - providing a unique client-centred service to businesses, organisations and individuals in Central Scotland since 2011.
'The coaching provides you with the tools to improve, whilst the consulting aims to provide you with solutions.'
Embracing an informal yet highly professional approach, I aim to work with clients to channel energy and enthusiasm into identifying and achieving positive outcomes and solutions to a wide range of issues and activities such as:
- Enhancing personal impact and performance
- Providing insight into direction
- Changing the work environment to suit your needs
- Improving engagement with others
- Assisting in faster and more efficient progression towards goals
- Bettering time management
- Managing change, conflict, stress or crisis
- Preparation for a change in role
- Dynamic personal and professional development
I also run a websitee called Human Ages which aims to be a meeting place for those who want to find the best of themselves in this world, and especially for those of us who aim to be better as we age – to live well – physically, mentally, and spiritually.
By exploring past and present individuals and groups, societies and cultures, we will gain insight into how ‘a life well lived’, in those times, in those situations, and with those people, can influence how we look to our own futures. You can find the website at www.humanages.com
"Craig is, quite simply, the best listener I know. He has a really gentle, approachable coaching style, but is also not afraid to ask tough questions when needed. During our sessions, we talked about everything ranging from streamlining mundane practicalities, right through to some really big questions about values and purpose.
It was Socrates who is credited with saying that “the unexamined life is not worth living”. Now, whilst I think that’s a bit of an overstatement, I do believe that an examined life is far more worth living. Overall, the coaching sessions were one of the best investments I’ve ever made. Even many years later, whenever I feel off-track, I still use the techniques Craig taught me, to figure out why, and to set a new direction. If you are feeling similarly in a rut, and need some help to figure things out, I highly recommend Craig’s services.” D.S. Chemical Engineer
"Craig is an excellent facilitator who has given me a different perspective on various issues. I have made real progress in a short time, both in how I allocate my time and the style of communication both within and external to my team. I have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone looking for a way forward." Anne Moore, Deputy Director, Facilities Services, Queen Margaret University
"I can attest to his professionalism, wide knowledge and ability to get to the heart of issues. Craig is goal-oriented and he will bring his intellect and commitment to bear to ensure his clients achieve their objectives." Vanessa Glynn, Former Head of Europe Team, Scottish Government and of External Liaison Unit, Scottish Parliament
