About me

Hello from our strange new world,

The first thing I want to alert you to is this -

Why am I doing this? Well, I need an income but just as important is that I want to be of service in these difficult times. The need for professional listeners is even stronger than ever. I can help you if you're suffering or afraid with regard to Covid-19 and all its ramifications. I have had the illness myself and recovered from it so I have intimate knowledge of the virus itself.

Or, if you're feeling stuck, we can talk about your life now and what has changed about how you envisage your life in the future. Nobody knows for sure what the impact of the pandemic will have on us all in the long term.  As a coach I can support you in the self-discoveries you are having now, and any ideas you have about what to do with those when we are free again. Humans need to imagine a future, and we can do that together, based on your needs and desires.

Or, if you just need to offload to someone who isn't one of your family or friends, I can do that too...

And it's at a fee that you decide and can manage...

We can safely talk by Skype, Zoom, Facetime or phone.

Here's a blog about my experience of having had coronavirus so that you can compare notes, or learn from how I dealt with it. Copy and paste into your browser.

Now back to the normal spiel!

Are you feeling unfulfilled? Fed up? Do you need change but lack the will to do it?

Here are 3 ways coaching creates positive change:

  • I believe that, along with actually living (eating, sleeping, walking the dog…) life can be immeasurably improved by being aware of what we are doing – not all the time, of course, sometimes we need escapism – but enough so that we don’t live our lives in a fog. Coaching brings awareness.
  • Humans are great procrastinators, putting off tasks or activities that fall outside our comfort zones. In this constant state of deferral we can squander our precious lives…and spend a lot of time feeling guilty about not doing what we said we would. Coaching is a catalyst to action.
  • Some of us have lots of friends and family, some of us don’t. Whichever, it is hard to find unbiased, non-judgmental help from those we care about – no matter how much they love you, they often bring their own needs to any conversation you have. Coaching offers unconditional support.

With a compassionate approach, which values your experience and your character, I offer coaching which gives you the insight to improve your confidence and achieve real, lasting change. I strongly believe in making each coaching session a useful experience, and not just an aimless chat!

Importantly, I can help you to take responsibility for changing the aspects of your thinking and behaviour that are standing in the way of a meaningful, enjoyable existence. I believe it is vital for you to see clearly how you sabotage yourself, and how you can behave in more positive ways. It's important to me that you take away discoveries you can use, beyond our coaching time together.

I am very practical. My mission is to empower you to achieve real transformation in how you live, so that you can achieve the goals that are to your greatest benefit and learn how to be comfortable with who you are.

How we meet: At my base, through Skype, or out and about, walking in a convenient park and taking some air and exercise as we talk.

My specialist areas:

Business and Career Coaching - I believe that business success starts with the individual, and that, when you work on yourself, the positive changes you achieve strongly affect your ability to be more productive. Do you need help to be a better leader? Or a happier worker? We can discuss your individual situation and tailor coaching to it with a variety of strategies. I am currently a regular coach for multinational company Lush, and have worked within various other businesses, both blue chip and small scale, to deliver individual and group coaching sessions for staff at all levels to improve their experience of work so that they have more personal engagement in their organisation or company. And if you want to change your career, I can help steer you to a different, better role.

Work/Life Balance – In this age of information technology, it seems we are never free of work demands. We know that our bodies are not indestructible, and yet it is easy to be sucked into asking too much of ourselves, with resultant burn-out. Whether you have already run yourself into the ground, or can see it on the horizon, coaching can help you to slow down and prioritise your wellness over a stressed-out lifestyle.

Presentation and Communication Skills - As a former stand-up comic, actor and TV and radio presenter, I am an expert in presentation and communication skills, and can give you solid practical support that will vastly improve how you sell yourself and your ideas to your clients, colleagues and employees.

Freelance Working – More and more of us are becoming self-employed, a state which sounds great in theory, and which in practice can be a minefield. Without a regular salary, the support of co-workers, and a boss telling you what to do, how do you motivate yourself, keep disciplined and grow your business? I can help.

Relationship Support - Loving and being loved in an intimate relationship is one of the most profound and satisfying experiences we can have. Yet, it can be so hard to achieve, and, when we have it, so easy to lose. What can you do that is different from your unsuccessful behaviour in the past? How do you get past the fear of failure? How do you create the conditions to make and continue a great relationship?

Potent Profiles - A special service in which I write an online dating profile for you after gathering material in a one hour coaching session. How do you want to present yourself and what sort of person are you looking for? Together we investigate these questions and I produce the dating profile your best self really deserves: attractive, distinctive and inviting. See here for more:

Art as Work – A career in the arts presents its own special challenges, and whilst its rewards can be very satisfying, the journey to triumph can be full of setbacks and punishing to physical and mental health. How do you stay sane in this world and continue to produce good work? How do you earn a living? What sort of compromises are possible?

Finishing Your Book – We all have a book in us, they say, but how do we stick at our desk and produce the goods, and go one better than the writers who never complete? I will read your factual or fiction book (so far), give you feedback, and help organise you into a routine, with ongoing mentoring and coaching to see it through to the final page and beyond. I am the author of The Improv Book: Improvisation for Theatre, Comedy, Education and Life (Oberon Books) as well as numerous plays and theatre criticism for Whatsonstage and others.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified coach with a Diploma in Personal Transformation Coaching from the Animas Institute (AC and ICF accredited). I have a BA (Hons) degree in Drama and English, and a City and Guilds qualification in Adult Education. I trained as a drama therapist specialising in psychodrama with Dusan Potkonjak.

I am an in-house coach with cosmetics company Lush, run group facilitations with various bodies, and see individuals in my own practice.

My background is in theatre, broadcasting and teaching. My work has been largely about communication and self-expression, and along with acting, directing, writing and presenting, I have facilitated many years of courses in drama, improvisation, comedy, confidence-building, presentation skills and flirting (Flirtshops!)

For my own well-being I practise mindfulness, yoga and swimming and have regular peer supervision.

Other areas of coaching I deal with

Leadership, Goal-setting, Motivation, Confidence, Procrastination, Presentation Skills, Creativity, Online Dating Profile Writing.

Ian Springer - Pharmacist

‘I found Alison very easy to talk to. She gives feedback in a warm and constructive way. She is flexible in her approach, allowing me to focus on concerns I have on a particular day, but also reminding me of my goals and summing up and reflecting back to me what I have said. Alison is an excellent life coach, who helped me in the six weeks that we spent together to set goals which helped me make life changes. Highly recommended.’
Lesley A. – Local Government Administrator

‘I found coaching a very useful experience; I am a very busy person with lots going on in my life and it was very valuable for me to have a dedicated time to think about how to improve my life rather than just steaming ahead and feeling out of control. Alison has brilliant listening skills and a positive calming energy. I found her very patient and thorough, taking time to understand and prompting me to investigate beyond the surface of certain thoughts or issues. I am now more conscious of my talents and my instincts, and I believe I can continuously make space to breathe, be creative and continue to sustain and enjoy a managerial role.

I am so grateful for Alison’s support and insight at a time when I lacked clarity and strength whilst struggling to manage my many commitments and wellbeing. I am now much more centred whilst I continuously lay the foundations to live a fulfilling and positive life.Thank you for your time and dedication, Alison. I feel very humbled and grateful.
