Career Coaching - How Does it Help?
Your career spans most of your life, from starting out after school or college and deciding what you want to do after studying in a secure, structured environment to becoming an adult in the wider world. Deciding your career path, interests and skills is difficult at any age, but in your teens, harder still with the other developoments already going on mentally and physically!
Then your first job - applications and what to include, layout and key skills, the forever daunting interview techniques and 'right' answers. Who does what, when and how? Scary because we don't know what will happen - but we can plan for eventualities, look at what is likely to happen and learn how to manage it.
Changes including promotions, department moves, efficiency strategies leading to realigned roles, cuts, redundancies maybe - or moving to a new company and the people, environment, culture changes that come with that - relationships, loss, uncertainty...these are all things we need to deal with here.
As you get older, wiser and more experienced, your values and expectations change. Needs change too, with life events like marriage and family, divorce and loss, stress and strains all playing a part, and managing these whilst holding down a job is so difficult sometimes.
Then comes the light at the end of the tunnel for some - retirement! Hurray. Or maybe not. Again, feelings of loss, adjustment to a new you and role/responsibilities can come into play. Losing friends, losing structure, self-reliance, self-worth and image are just some of the changes to manage when you expect it to be simply relaxing - but sorry, not quite yet!
So, each stage of our career, every month, every year, we are in transition. Whether a new project, a new manager, new colleagues, a new place, changing values and beliefs, cultures and expectations, problems and achievements. We never stop transitioning yet we find it hard to manage and implement - because it's unknown. People like security, certainty, options and opportunities, so we fight change when instead we could embrace it, understand it and go with the flow more i.e. manage it.
So this is how Career Coaching can help you.
