Call of the Midwife
4th March, 20140 Comments
The opening scene of the BBC TV Drama series, 'Call the Midwife' on Sunday 2 March 2014 has Jenny Lee returning to the midwifery mix of young women and nuns at the Nonnatus House convent in the East End of London after her time away grieving for her dead fiancé.
The voice-over narrates as if it is her thoughts and she announces that she has 'returned to the work that defines her'.
I think the concept of a calling, something to which we MUST respond is not always a popular idea today. However, 'work that defines' is as it taps into the idea of being true to oneself or a life that is integrated and defined by who we are. Many company leaders and business owners find it fulfilling to consider WHY they do business as well as thinking through what they want to achieve through their companies because it is about what defines them as people and clarifies their motivation for what they do.
With individuals too, like Jenny Lee, we can try to discover work that connects to who we are, work that 'defines us' and meeting with a career coach is one way of helping to reflect on what this type of work might look like.
As spring finally begins to happen and we see new birth around us, maybe there is a new beginning for you in the not too far distant future?
